Ballasting a burned out SBMV?

Since SBMV bulbs burn out due to the filament breaking and not the arc tube failing, would it be possible to ballast the arc tube using a standard mercury vapor ballast once the filament has run its course?

Not unless you're able to connect the two points where the filament was together, it's in series with the arctube and when it breaks it will create an open circuit regardless of what kind of ballast you try.
