HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!

Looking for an affordable warehouse to store stashes of lamps. « on: January 11, 2022, 04:17:29 AM » Author: WorldwideHIDCollectorUSA
As I have been coming to accept that LED lighting is set to be used in almost every electric light fixture in the world, I am really looking at the idea of trying to stock up on lifetime supplies of fluorescent, HID, and low pressure sodium lamps vecause these lamps are becoming harder to find with each passing day due to LED currently dominating well over 90% of the global lighting industry. Since I am considering trying to live in a college dorm room, I do not think I will have enough space to store my stashes of lamps, ballasts, and fixtures that I am considering using in the future. Even though I am considering stocking up on these lamps, I will try to find uses for them. I am really looking for some warehouses that I can purchase and own at very low prices. I am also considering the idea of stocking up because I really do not like the idea of having to use mostly LED lighting in almost every fixture in my house due to the fact that anything non-LED will become extremely hard to find in the near future. For me, I really like the idea of using preheat fluorescent lights all over my house for instant light applications because I enjoy watching these fluorescent lamps blink to life on startup. For applications where I want to use lighting for an extended period of time, I am considering using HID and low pressure sodium lighting in those cases. If I cannot afford to buy a warehouse, I would like help finding some that I can rent at low prices since I do not want to have lamps, ballasts, and fixtures being stored in every room of my house.

Desire to collect various light bulbs (especially HID), control gear, and fixtures from around the world.

.LOL.LOL. I don't know about the real-estate market where you are (or your definition of ' very low prices') ... but where I am, this can be put in simple terms: Aint Gonna Happen! Period! even simply "low prices" or "moderate prices" .. that's just not happening here.

A warehouse seems like total overkill unless you're going to go in to business of selling lights & stuff. I mean just how much do you plan to own/use/collect/save?? :o :o
Honestly, if you're considering going to college, put your time & effort & money towards that first. Its far more important than lights!

Certainly for me a warehouse would be way far overkill (even if I could afford it) .lol. Personally what I'd like to have is a cheap simple house used only to store all my extra stuff in (wouldn't even have to be liveable condition--just weather tight & structurally sound). That ofcourse will never happen considering the average house is over 500k & rising (even something thats a complete beater I doubt you'll get into for under 400k). Now take that 500k price drop 90% off & you'd be in my affordability range. LOL

Cheapest thing to do is get a small shipping container and rent u a
Storage space of 20 x 8 foot space,  u can store 1000s of lamps in them with ease.  It will be far cheaper renting a storge lockers.

Friend, if you think you're going to find affordable real estate for collectors like us anywhere in North America (maybe except for middle of nowhere Alaska or something) then I have a bridge to sell you. As was suggested before, a storage unit or container would be a much more realistic option. I've been looking into getting a designated storage place for my collection too as I'd like to stock up on stuff that will likely become unobtainable in the future, and anything more than a medium-large shed, attic, or container would be out of budget and overkill.

I'd forget about it. For two main reasons. One, the cost. My mother's house, which was in really poor condition, sold for £380,000 last year. The buyers are gutting and extending it, and by the time they're finished, I wouldn't mind betting they'll get a million for it.

Secondly, and at the risk of boring people yet again, I don't believe in stocking up to the 'stash' level, as all you'll do is reduce available supply and drive up prices for the rest of us.

Set aside one room in your house, or just rent a small storage unit.

Buy what you need, not what you want.

I personally feel like stocking up because I do not feel like being forced to use LED lighting in every light socket in my future home.

Like I said, buy what you need, not just what you want. How many lamps do you think you're going to actually need..? I very much doubt it'll be a warehouse-full.

I feel pressured to have as many traditional lighting sources and fixtures because I do not enjoy the feeling of being forced to use LED lighting in almost every light socket in my house once almost all traditional light sources get discontinued in favor of LED.

As Jeremy has said if you absolutely need to stock up on lamps, then a 20 x 8 storage unit could have with the correct type of shelving up to 500 linear feet of storage.  :wndr:

We've got enough lampses in one cardboard box to last us a lifetime for day to day use.  :bulbman:

Yeah in my area a small "starter" home costs around 1-1.3 million so unless you're willing to drive 2 hours away from the city where land is cheaper to a warehouse it's not going to be cheap.

The best option would be to either move out into a rural area where you can build a large outbuilding for your collection or buy a house (instead of a apartment) and then stick your collection in the basement. TBH unless you're buying 4ft and 8ft fluorescent lamps by the hundreds and also collecting a ton of cobraheads, you can probably fit your entire collection in a room in your basement if you add shelving and pack things efficiently.

Keep in mind with the long life of HID and fluorescent, you can easily go a decade before lamp changes on less frequently used lights. With a lamp that has a rated life of 24000 hours, running 3 hours per day they can last for 21 years. Taking that into perspective you might not even need to stock up as much lamps as you think.

Another thing to keep in mind is that there will probably be another lighting technology in the future to challenge LED in the future so perceptions towards LED might change too. HPS and electronic T8 fluorescent were viewed in much the same eye when I joined as LED is now.

Personally, even today, I find electronically ballasted fluorescent lamps to be pretty boring. For me, I seem to enjoy lamps that serve as drop in retrofits because such lamps allow me to use more lamp choices in a single fixture.
