UK street lights - LEDs can be done right? « on: December 11, 2021, 10:33:50 AM » Author: AgentHalogen_87
It's no secret that there are a few people on this forum who like sodium lamps, and think they are superior in every way (I happen to be one of them). However, it is sadly clear that LEDs are here to stay. So, with that in mind, instead of trying to get rid of the things, why not try working with them? Instead of the horrid glare from the daylight white LED modules currently used in street lighting, why not try amber/yellow LEDs?  :wndr: The warm light they give off doesn't have as bad of a glare, it contains much less blue light, and mimics sodium quite well. I have just found an online petition which is campaigning for UK street lights to use such amber LEDs. It may not change much, but there's no harm in trying is there? While myself and others still want SOX :lps: and SON :hps: to reign supreme, this is the next best thing. I have linked the petition page below in the event you want to sign it.

Problem is, as orange/amber LED is the least efficient colour, they would have to go with 4000 K, then put amber glass over the diodes!, and in Europe that’s already being done in places.
However, I’m starting to see new installations of 3000 K street lighting now where I am, and it’s a much better colour than the standard 4000, as they resemble tungsten lighting at night.

I would settle for warm white rather than daylight. The cold white lights are so harsh for me that I need to use yellow tinted goggles when I go out at night. (Part of the reason I'm biased towards sodium). The less blue the better.

The 3000K LED street lights are the most used here at the moment. In natural sensitiv areas the amber tinted lenses are preferred as the light is really like LPS. There are very new installations with 2200K phosphor LEDs which resembles well aged HPS lamps with their yellow-white pinkish light.

Another idea is the retrofit method of keeping the SOX fixtures whilst installing the LED gear in them. Wish they did that more often than changing to awful looking LED fixtures
