Largest installation of Induction fixtures « on: August 31, 2009, 08:04:55 PM » Author: FGS
Here's another one but this time it's Induction. Either Sylvania's Icetrons or Philips QLs.

#1 - At a Dillard's store there is a whole bunch of Icetrons of 100w.

#2 - At a Wake Technical Community College (North Campus) there is a couple of QLs of 85w.

#3 - At an unknown store there is a couple of fixtures possibly carrying two lamps of QLs of 85w.

#4 - Possible induction lamps inside Costco's freezers. Will try and confirm whether they're induction and whose brand. Light from inside the freezer look kinda weird to me, dunno why they look weird to me. (Not the High Outputs at door edge but inside where they re-stock the freezers inside so the older products will be at front while newer will be at the back.)

#5 - Possible induction lamps at a local park. There is a bunch of acorn fixtures carrying white light (Nice either way!) They look too diffused and softer than MHs. I will try and see whether the lamps pulses when looked through the camera. If not, induction QLs. If it does then they're coated MHs. (Unknown if the makes electronic ballasts for acorn fixtures.)

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.

Could easily be fluorescents

All electronic ballasts do not pulse much in the camera, while all might still pulse a bit, including supply units for induction lamps. The extent of the pulsing is given by the filtering properties in the mains rectifier - the front end part of any electronic unit (convert mains AC to intermediate DC bus, sometimes it include PFC stage) and by the presence of following main current regulating principle.
This rectification yield some ripple to the bus.
In the case of HF or induction lamps, whose are ballasted by some impedance (on electrode lamps ths is usually an inductor as component, on induction leakage inductance between the excitation winding and the plasma "secondary"), this is modulated to the HF current feeding the lamp, so modulate the lamp's output.
Square wave "high pressure" ballasts have their ballasting stage based on a DCDC regulator, what by it's action remove all low frequency ripple, then the current pass to low frequency chopper, what swap the polarity each few ms to avoid metal migration (but the swapping is immediate, within few us the polarity reverse, so it does no effect on the lamp output)

You can check this with your eyes too, just "sweep" your eyes quickly over the lamp and you may see the flash pattern for a brief moment in front of you.

That remind me. I need to update the LPS installation topic to include this tunnel. Thanks! Will try and see if I can go there. Not gonna happen any time soon. Need to train driving and get my license, remember? ;)

FGS, remember its NOT the one in I-95 (the one that has long row of fluorecent and LPS in the begining of enterance....its still the same except one of the tunnels heading south has a short row of test LEDs.......

Its the other tunnel that's east side of the I-95....how you get there, go North in I-95, as you get to Howard County,....keep going until you find an exit to I-895 it will take you east....and keep going, eventually you'll be in the older tunnel that formerally had a bunch of LPS in the whole tunnel, which now was upgraded to icetrons, in matter of fact, the fixtures looks almost exactly the same as the older LPS ones!.....after the tunnel, you can keep going north and you'll see reallllly TALL new highmasts like I posted......and you'll be back on I-95......heck I'm willing to drive you there one day....maybe we can meet some other lighting collectors I know...or whatever :-D

There's a supermarket near me with possible induction fixtures installed. They replaced some MHs one for one I think.

In California there are a few induction lights, prolly the largest installed base would be the freeway sign lights. Caltrans, the state highway authority, is currently changing out the mercury sign lights with induction. There are a few inductions in the posttops in LA and Sacramento. Simi Valley is currently testing 4 Icetron induction lamps at two signalized intersections.

UPDATE - The #5 aren't induction but MHs inside a cylinder refractor thing inside the acorn refractor.

UPDATE: I just found out today when browsing the Toronto Hydro website that there is a test site (test site #7) of induction streetlighting in Toronto.
