All lighting except LED rules!

What is the easiest way to grow your lighting collection? « on: July 27, 2021, 07:04:58 PM » Author: thelightingman
I am curious as how to easily grow my lighting collection as it is VERY hard to find lighting other than LED where I live and when I do find lighting other than LED, it is either very cheap but I don't have have money for it and when I go back with money it's gone (the most common scenario) or it is severely overpriced. (which is rare which is cool.) I just need some advice. Thanks.  :)

You guys on your side of the pond are lucky in that you have these Restore places, which seem to have all sorts of goodies. We don't have anything like those here, so we're limited to either eBay, Amazon, electrical wholesalers, or trading with other collectors.

Trading is really a wonderful way of getting stuff you wouldn't otherwise come across. We've had a lot of lamps from collectors on this site in the US that we would never have found in the UK, and in return we've sent lamps from here that you don't get there.

So I would really look to see what other people here have, assuming they are interested in trading. Don't bother people asking if you can have stuff, that will only annoy them and create bad feeling. But if someone puts up a picture of something they have several of and are willing to sell or trade, it's worth seeing if you can strike a deal. Keep an eye on the wanted/for sale boards as well.

Save money for the lighting hobby so that when you find something you want, you will have the money for it. I was ordering brand new street lights from an electrical supply house when I was around your age. I also started working on my own when I was like 12 though. I started mowing lawns in my neighborhood and was making good money for someone my age. It was my sophomore year in high school when I ordered my first two cobraheads. I didn't have a car yet so I actually rode the city bus to the supply house to pick one of them up when they received it. It's been the electrical supply house and eBay where I've gotten a good amount of my street lights from. I don't even want to think about how much money I've spent on my collection over the years. Now I have started selling some of my collection though to make room for other things I want plus trying to pay off the debt this hobby has gotten me into.

Yeah, you will have to work for your lighting collection. As HPSM250R2 said, save up money for what you want. The best you can do are neighborhood jobs like mowing lawns, washing cars, and stuff like that for earning money if you can't work an actual job yet.

I admit my parents bought me most of the lights I have today. I have lots, but for lights, I really wanted and know my parents won't buy for me I bought them with my own money that I have saved up. An example was two 175w MV yard lights I saw at a ReStore. At a price of thirty dollars for the pair (one new basically and one used), I know my parents wouldn't spend that much (for the ReStore). So I got my money and paid the cashier. Unfortunately at that time, I was short a few dollars so I had to borrow from my brother but I paid him back the money I owed.

Yeah you have to work for it unless you're super-rich. It's taken a good few years and more money than I dare think of to get where we are now. I think we're slowing down now, we have all the SOX lamp ratings and a lot of other stuff, and quite honestly we're running out of space

Fortunately for us, we're more interested in lamps than entire street lighting fixtures, so they don't take up nearly as much room, but they still take up most of every cupboard and nearly every flat surface

Depending on where you live, checking the local classified ads on sites like Kijiji, Craigslist, and Facebook Marketplace might net you some good finds. I live in the city and I find most of good stuff in terms of street lights are rural areas.

If you have any local scrap and salvage yards, I'd politely ask the owner to browse through those and then offer to buy the lights at scrap value. Same goes for any contractors that might be friendly.

As mentioned above, Habitat Restores are a good place to get lighting for cheap too. You could also try try thrift stores, the chain stores like Salvation Army, Goodwill, and Savers/Value Village have a lighting section too. Independent thrift stores are also worth checking out if you have one. Often they will price things cheaper than the chain stores.
