That's one thing that drives me absolutely crazy in terms of owning more than one vehicle. I just checked both of mine to make sure again too.
My Mazda has the tach to the left and speedo to the right. My Genesis has the tach to the right and speedo to the left, which I also prefer.
When I'm in one car, my brain processes it and I get confused when I see the tach in a different spot once I'm in the other car.
One car is an automatic while the other one is manual... and for some odd reason, that seems to help me the most with this, even though sometimes
I find myself searching for the clutch with my foot in the automatic.

Looks like I've opened up a right can of worms here  :mrg:

Also, now I drive an automatic left-hand-drive car instead of the usual RHD here, I sometimes find myself reaching for a gear shift or handbrake on my left, and wondering why my hand is hitting the door

I've played the manual VS. auto game before !! My little truck is old enough that it doesn't have a clutch interlock switch for the ignition ! More that once I've jumped in it after driving automatics , turned the key and had the truck lurch in the direction of whichever gear I previously left it in !  :mrg: DOH !  I've also done the hunt for the clutch pedal game after driving the manual vehicles .

As for tach VS. speedo placement , the Subaford is speedo on the right and tach on the left , the Marauder is speedo in the middle , tach on the right , fuel & temp gauges on the left .

Ah, there's the difference; if you mainly drive manuals, then you automatically check that the transmission is in neutral before starting. With an auto of course, it's not possible to start in gear.

Being snowmobiles, that issue doesn't really apply here.  They only "gears" they have is forward and reverse.  The tach/speedo on the newer machine are kind of a luxury too.  The only gauge the older machine has is a dual temperature gauge.

To my surprise, I've only done the "gear hop" one time with the Genesis, even though that's my first ever manual car. I normally keep it in neutral
when I put it in park, with the emergency brake engaged. Luckily the "gear hop" did nothing because of the emergency brake.
My Mazda 3 does NOT have a temp gauge, and this is another issue with that car that drives me absolutely insane. A blue light illuminates when the car
engine is cold, and a red light illuminates if the car engine is hot. The coolant issue is still there, so I haven't really been driving it these last few weeks.
For today, I'm relaxing... been over working myself at work... so I'm staying home in the warmth, about to order me some pizza from Pizza Hut.

I was always taught to leave a manual parked in first gear, then if the handbrake fails it won't run away if you're on a hill. But don't forget to put it in neutral before starting  :mrg:

Oh, pizza. Currently "off" it, but usually keep a couple of frozen ones in the freezer, then warm them up in the oven. A lot cheaper and they're still hot when you come to eat them  ;D

I was always taught to put a manual in reverse . I did have one old car that was originally manual which was converted to automatic.  That particular car DID NOT have the neutral safety switch installed ! It would start with the gear selector in ANY position !  :o :poof: I wasn't really concerned about it and never fixed it as the car was previously used as a drag racing car .

@Rommie, it's funny you mention that... I've actually had that handbrake fail one time. Luckily I was inside the car as it happened, in front of my garage.
I engaged the brake and began getting out of the car. That's when it started... rolling backwards... 💀 ... but I managed to stop it from rolling and
re-engage that emergency brake. Slight PTSD and OCD though from then on, because anytime I get out of that car, I double check the e-brake to make sure it's
fully engaged. I think that car rolls back regardless of gear though, even if it's off. I'll have to test that out to be sure.
@Wide-lite 1000, I wonder how much money it cost them to convert from manual to automatic? That sounds expensive! I prefer manual though. Manual makes me
feel as if I'm in more control, plus it's much more fun. It's funny how this works... I prefer manual, yet I lean more towards automatic for the longer trips.
As for pizza, I almost ate an entire large stuffed crust pizza from Pizza Hut not too long ago, ending my day. Wow. Tomorrow I have to
workout at some point... that is for sure.
@Icefoglights, I've never been on a snowmobile before but I've heard they're fun, and I think I have a friend that may still have his.

As Ria said a shop bought pizza is a whole lot cheaper than buying from Pizza Hut, or one of the other outlets.!  :poof:

@ suzukir122: This was 1970 Ford muscle car . Whoever did it used 2nd hand parts from a junkyard so it probably cost them very little . Honestly , for most lower level drag racing , an automatic trans is usually faster.

As for parking the car in 1st gear , I've seen cars with weak engines slowly creep downhill as the compression bleeds off . It usually won't do that in reverse for some reason . Either way , setting the brake is always a good idea .

I was taught to use 1st gear, but I have seen reverse too.  Parking brake is best, but there is a risk of them freezing up in the winter here.

@wide-light: My dad's old truck did that to me once.  I parked it on a friend's sloped driveway in 1st gear with the parking brake on (it was Summer).  The poorly adjusted parking brake and malaise era low compression engine just wasn't enough to hold it on the hill, and I came out to find it slowly rolling its way down towards the street.

My dad had a late-50s Chevrolet that came with the 2-speed Powerglide that slipped badly.  He was able to go the junk yard and find a manual transmission, clutch pedal and linkage assembly, flywheel and steering column from a manual transmission model, along with a new clutch and pressure plate from the parts store and swapped it over in his driveway.

My brother's Datsun Pick up would just creep forward about a foot or so until it hit the compression stroke on the next cylinder and sit there until it bled off then creep forward another foot or so , Rinse and repeat !  Strangest thing I ever saw !!!

I got out of school once as most of the busses had the parking brakes freeze during a really cold spell in New England !

We spent the afternoon at the hospital visiting my mummy.  :(
She had a bad fall in the bathroom, she's all right now. But they don't know what caused her to fall.  ???
