Hmm. eBay has done it again, they have cut out PayPal and changed the way sellers get paid. You now have to supply them with your bank details and who knows what other personal information and they manage the payment process themselves, taking a cut and four times as long to process payments. Buyers can still use PayPal, but it takes a lot longer for the seller to get paid Now I don't sell on eBay much, but this means I will now no longer be able to do so at all. There is NO WAY that I am giving eBay my bank details I can see thousands of small sellers deserting eBay in droves over this. Here are the links to the info pages - Here is the page for the US site and here is the UK version. I am not a happy bunny

Now I don't sell on eBay much, but this means I will now no longer be able to do so at all. There is NO WAY that I am giving eBay my bank details I haven't seen anything about this other than at some point last year that it was going to be an option for sellers. Is it something they're now gonna force on people now? If that's the case, like you I won't be selling anything there anymore (not that anything I have listed there sells anyway.. eBay is pretty much worthless for selling on these days) Are there any good eBay replacements out there yet?? I remember looking a couple years ago, and the few little eBay-like sites out there flat out sucked.

As far as I can tell, it's going to be compulsory. I can't find any opt-in or outs in there, anyway

Hmm that's new. I sometimes sell some things here and there but back then you could get paid via Paypal so unless you wanted to withdraw the funds into cash you didn't need to link a bank account. I always opted just to hold on to the funds in my Paypal and then use that on eBay purchases.
I suppose this is because eBay is trying to deintegrate itself from Paypal after selling it off.
Unfortunately I don't know of any good alternatives to eBay, you could try to sell locally or Amazon but I'm not exactly the biggest fan of said company's business practices.

Amazon is a no-no, I closed my account after seeing a VERY scary documentary on the BBC last year about their data mining practices. They make Google, Microsoft and FarceBuke look insignificant by comparison. They either know or are trying to get to know more about everybody (and I mean everybody, whether you use Amazon or not) than you could ever dream of. And they want more. A VERY scary organisation in my opinion

An idea would be to set up a dummy bank account and use paypal under the table.
The bank account has to be at least 12 months old and you have to supply them with a recent statement. So what happens if someone starts a business, has opened a new bank account for it, and wants to sell on eBay Crazy. I can see people leaving by the millions over this. Big companies might not care, but small private sellers/companies will go to the wall if they lose their market on eBay.

Thats a bit stupid, but some people are willing to wait a year. I don't think i can buy anything like that in the future, seems like someone might just wanna sell your details to a group or get compromised and millions of bankign accounts are worthless in a flash. I Don't know any other ebay alts so i guess besides are own in-person finds we gotta work with each other to get new lamps. Just a pity that small sellers are gonna lose my dollar for there bulbs because of dumb corporate shenanigans.

All more evidence that Ebay moved away from its roots and is simply no longer interested in the kind of small individual sellers who deal in genuine vintage or second hand goods. The kind of sellers Ebay likes these days are those who sell thousands of the same identical imported modern junk, and I am sure those kind of sellers won't have a problem with such a scheme. But as you say it will force the trade in vintage lamps and lighting equipment elsewhere. It would be nice if one other larger company might step into Ebay's place. In EU it already became far too fragmented and each country has several small local sites, and its just not practical to spend time searching all of those one by one. Even better : maybe one day someone will write a piece of software that properly lets you search all online second hand traders at the same time and deliver results from all!

The thing that really turned the tide on eBay for me is the way they decide what is local and what isn't. I like to buy from UK sellers as much as I can, so I select that in the listing options. All sorts of things come up, but if you check out the seller more closely, more often than not they are in China or somewhere, and merely have a warehouse full of imported junk somewhere in the UK. That way they can legitimately, according to eBay's rules, claim they are UK sellers, even though they're not As you say James, they have lost touch with their roots. We have a site called Gumtree here, which is a free classified ads site. I think I'll be use that for selling in future.

Yeah it's like that on both eBay and Amazon too, lots of cheap offbrand goods sitting in a local warehouse. eBay does still have the industrial equipment surplus dealers that sell stuff like lamps, ballasts, and luminaires though. And I agree that eBay doesn't seem interested in catering to the smaller sellers of vintage and used items anymore.
As for used goods, I prefer buying locally anyway. Less of a hassle and prices are often cheaper than buying from eBay since you don't have to pay shipping. There's a site called Kijiji that I use for this. Unfortunately both Kijiji and Gumtree seem to be owned by eBay now.
There are other alternatives depending on your location: Craigslist (dead in my area but more activity in Western Canada and the US) Varagesale (never really figured out how this site works and plus you need to link your account with Facebook) Facebook Marketplace (actually fairly popular in my area but it's pretty much baked into Facebook) Instagram (well I've seen some people sell things on Instagram, not really a buy and sell site though) OfferUp (seemed to be limited to the US) Bunz Trading (Seems to be only in Toronto area, plus it's more of a trading than a buy and sell site)
I still prefer Kijiji though as there's a decent amount of activity and the things I buy like lights and lamps are generally things that the bad actors don't sell.

That's fine if there are people selling what you want local to where you live. We're quite remote up here, it's at least a 2- to 3-hour drive to anywhere that's bigger (Edinburgh/Glasgow) and we don't have a car. So basically it's online or nothing

Well this is going to be the end of me selling things to make a bit of pocket change to go towards my lighting collection. Pretty frustrating and disappointing to say the least.

Yeah it's rather annoying for those casual sellers who mostly buy on the site but will sell something once in a blue moon. I wonder how the conversion works for those in Canada. I used to accept USD on my listings and then get paid in USD via Paypal. That way I was able to use those USD funds in my Paypal to pay for eBay items from the US and avoid the costs of converting from CAD to USD.

Right, an update on this. I had an email from eBay yesterday, saying this:
Update your account details by 31 May 2021, or your ability to create and edit listings will be disabled.
I contacted them and said I'm not happy, but they just metaphorically shrugged their corporate shoulders. Oh well, that's me no longer able to sell on eBay. I can still buy stuff, I presume, but I doubt many people will still be around for me to buy from, except perhaps dubious sellers with warehouses full of cheap crap originating who knows where (although we all do, let's face it).
I can see eBay getting into serious financial trouble over this.
