Something for y’all to think about « on: December 28, 2020, 08:56:59 PM » Author: desktoptrashcan
You need to light a 100 ft. long by 20 ft. high by 10ft. wide cave. You have 8000 watts of power available. What lighting technology do you use?
Anything goes! I want to see your clever ideas!  ;D   :P

I might use something like 5 1kW probe start M47 metal halide high bays.

80 x 98 watt LED low bay UFOs, and you probably wouldn’t need that many!
And that would be a more than ample 948,640 lumens!

I would either run one continuous row of 8ft PG17 two lamp turret luminaires down the centre or use a bunch of CDM330 (400w MH retrofit) highbays.

For the the 8ft PG17 turrets, one row down the centre would be 12 luminaires. With each lamp drawing 215w and assuming 20% additional watts for the ballast, the total power draw would be 6192w for a single row of luminaires. The combined lumen output is 336000 lumens.

The CDM330 highbays would be one row, spaced every 6ft for a total of 16 luminaires. Total power draw assuming 20% more for the ballast is 6336w. Combined lumen output is around 512000.

The quoted lumen outputs are just from the lamp, to get actual lumens that hits the ground would require a bit of work.

My 5 1kW M47 probe start metal halide high bays would produce roughly 550,000 lumens.

(200) F40T12BLB lamps.

Most caves should glow, if not, artistically paint the interior with black light reactive paints.

Seems I way over estimated my install?, 10 foot isn’t very wide for a cave!, so it could be done with just 40 UFOs, (2 rows of 20), @ 474,320 lumens for 3920watt?

10x 150W MH low bays, 90w LED UFOs as Angryhorse says or low bays with bare 250W SBMVs. Arranged in two rows of 5 evenly over the space.

I also suggest three rows of 15 2x F36T8 fluorescent fixtures.

Would my idea of lighting this cave with 5 1kW M47 probe start metal halide high bays seem overkill with about 550,000 lumens?

Not with a high ceiling no, yours would certainly be the easiest to maintain with just 5 fixtures though?

At least, there are several websites I found that still have 200w SLI/H lamps left in stock if anybody wants some, but they are pretty expensive.
