Loudest light fixture you've ever heard « on: December 27, 2020, 04:20:44 AM » Author: LightsoftheWest
What's the loudest light fixture you have ever heard? Mine are:

- A 175W MV yardblaster starting up
- An 8' F96T12 fluorescent in our
  boathouse
- A HPS GE M-400A2 FCO in Seattle

The Loudest I've ever heard was a Lithonia Wallpack that you could hear from 50 to 75 feet away.

2nd place is tied with an HPS GE M250R1 FCO and an unknown MH canopy light (both of which were just a few blocks from each other).

The loudest fluorescent fixture would have been a ACME F96T12 striplight with a shorted ballast capacitor.

I have a couple of Moberm under cabinet F15 strips in my basement entrance that are as loud as metal halide high bay ballasts. I can hear them from outside with the door closed. They have some Robertson slim chokes. In fact, when I still used ear plugs on the lawn mower, I used the ballast noise to test them as they were expanding in my ears. In case you’re wondering, I now use over the ear protection (with a headband) so the ballast hum now has no ‘purpose’ but is not disturbing either so no real motivation to change them.

There's a parking lot full of 1kW MH B2218s that gets pretty loud. In terms of the loudest light I have, I think the Cooper UCD is mine. Even though it's NOS and only 70w HPS, the OE ballast in it buzzzes loudly when I power it up.

It gotta be either a former Hubbell MHS floodlight or a MH shoebox at a Tilton Kohl’s.

400W or 1000W MH floodlight fixture at a Best Buy (now gone, replaced by LED)
70W HPS ceiling fixture at a bookstore (still there as of today, although the two next to it were retrofitted to LED)

For me it's a tie between My 1000w MH/MV 1987 M-1000 or My 1000w HPS GE A-1000 Powr/glow Both have ballasts that are alarmingly LOUD .  :o

I had an old fluorescent ballast that was noisy as frick! It was a Chinese one from the 80s or 60s, I got it from an old fluorescent fixture from the trash.
