I found an old Streetview!!!! Some fiddling around and I finally managed to see these old lights, are they Coopers? As you can see they are long gone after they started building the Anthony Henday freeway. The new ones you can see are quite low to the ground, for the Helicopters as this is by the military base and they have a Heli Squadron there. Kind of redundant since the helicopters never ever fly that low anyways lol

Those look to be Cooper OVLs, basically the successor to the OV50s made by Westinghouse. Nice find, I wonder what wattage they are.

HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!

In Los Angeles, California, USA; I remember seeing some split door GE M400 high pressure sodium lanterns in certain places that utilized plastic lenses instead of the typical glass lenses seen on most lanterns. Some things that I remembered about them is that they often browned out from the heat and UV radiation of the high pressure sodium lamps, they were also deeper compared to glass lenses, and lanterns with such lenses had a more pronounced high pressure sodium glow to them when they were illuminated at night. Here are some places where I remembered seeing such lanterns during my childhood: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0650035,-118.2511858,3a,16.3y,324.05h,119.1t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sQkZpqk3ffeS7m-0x0dbSXw!2e0!5s20110101T000000!7i13312!8i6656https://www.google.com/maps/@34.0359617,-118.0103982,3a,15.7y,98.74h,110.18t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sSb9DgZaJ1Pt6xw_W72AkTQ!2e0!5s20120801T000000!7i13312!8i6656https://www.google.com/maps/@34.1335271,-117.8945525,3a,40.9y,87.86h,101.29t/data=!3m7!1e1!3m5!1sPdewqEA7OdBvF0T5rchNtw!2e0!5s20120401T000000!7i13312!8i6656I wonder why those GE M400 lanterns were fitted with those lenses.

Interesting! That makes sense too. Here is one I remember from my childhood town, where I lived from 2000-03 I don't remember if it was MV, MH or HPS. I think it was HPS since you brought it up. Also come to think of it I also think those MV powerlite Gumballs were often fitted with metal halide bulbs, using the same Mecury vapor remote ballast, because the color shifting was quite variable, too much to be MV methinks.

Interesting also, is it because they are harder to shatter/damage?

Interesting to see that they used metal halide bulbs on the mercury vapor ballasts since in North America, there are no ignitors for mercury vapor ballasts to allow for metal halide lamp operation. In addition, due to the low OCV of mercury vapor ballasts, probe start metal halide lamps become less able to start up on their own as they age after only a few hundred hours of use.

The plastic refractors were supposed to have more impact resistance than the glass version .

I could be dead wrong, and I probably am lol. They may have changed that ballasts indeed. I just remember the very notable colour shifting when ever going down the streets at night when I was a kid, IIRC the way I described the degree of colour shifting someone brought up how it’s more likely to be metal halide.

I have a couple of those Powerlite gumballs and they only take medium base lamps so back in the MV days they probably would have been fitted with 100w or 125w MV. Which is pretty much the highest wattage MV in that form factory easily obtainable with a medium base. They're typically used with incandescent up to 300w but I've seen a few with remote ballasted MV.
Anyway for a MH conversion they could have changed the remote ballast to one designed for 70w MH or 175w MH both of which come in a ED-17 medium base bulb. With some clever mounting a MH ballast will fit in the head but it's quite cramped...I have one of mine setup to run 39w CMH lamps with a internal ballast.
