Can flourescents glow under powerlines? « on: September 26, 2006, 03:47:32 PM » Author: don93s
On more than one occasion, I have read that under certain conditions, a hand held flourescent lamp will glow under a high tension powerline.

So, I'm curious. I've never tried this, but I've heard powerlines "crackling" in wet weather. Especially by the ocean in the salty air. We're talking probably half a million volts or so. Has anyone ever tried this? Or does anyone have an unusual story of making a light bulb light up?

yes flourescent lamps can glow under powerlines the very high amount of electro-magnetic energy around the lines excites the phosporus causing the lamps to illuminate.

I haven't tried holding a lamp under high voltage power lines, but I was able to get a fluorescent lamp to flicker and glow a little by holding on to it, and dragging my feet on the carpet. It would have to be a dark room of course and conditions would have to be right for alot of static electricity.

im sure you were just joking as high tension powerlines are always mounted very high off the ground to prevent deadly contact.

I did the same with a neon lamp. I dragged my feet on carpet and asked my brother to touch the other lead of the lamp. Yeah it flashed once.

Why I like LEDs on top of other lighting tech?
LEDs = Upgrade 95% of the applications. (That is if you avoid eBay's LEDs).

LED brainwash? No, people uses them cuz they work well for them.
