HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!

Does anybody get frustrated at other members when they hoard lamps and fixtures to give nobody else a chance to collect them?

Somewhere There Is Light(ning)

I don't see other members ..even if they are hoarding hundreds of lamps & fixtures.. as in any way not giving me a chance .LOL. People on here are so spread out that very nearly 100% of those lamps/fixtures are so far from me I wouldn't be able to have gotten them anyway.
------------- But overall, I can remember only one case where someone did something that angered/frustrated some other members - basically being kinda sneaky about it, going in & buying out a bunch of lamps without giving anyone a chance. (I believe this was on one of the UK light galleries, not here on LG. I know it was atleast in the UK)

There are some members I know who get pissed at certain members who hoard stuff like that, yes. Often it led to bidding wars and highly inflated prices.

A lot depends on your definition of the word hoarding. To me, it means buying lamps by the case and just keeping them in the cupboard or attic and not offering them for sale or trade to other members.
If you have genuine need for two cases of SOX lamps, for example, say you have a large property and you have several fixtures lighting it on a nightly basis, that's one thing, you need spares. But buying boxes and boxes of lamps and just storing them, never to be seen again, just doesn't sit right with me. That's depriving others who may just want one or two lamps for their collection, and I don't like it. Why does anyone need 20 or 30 lamps just to store them and never use them..?

IMO if they're lamps that are still being mass produced (T8, MH, modern MV etc) then I have no problems if you buy one case or a hundred. It's the more vintage, rare, and collectible lamps that I have issue when people buy a large amount of. Especially for rare items.
With the example of SOX I feel that they're still common enough to buy one or two cases for future use if you have a light that uses them regularly.

Why would you need that amount of lamps, a SOX lamp has a rated life of at least 20,000 hours so that's over six years of eight hours per day, multiply that by twelve that makes seventy two years. You can't tell me that you need more than one or two lamps to last your lifetime. And now that they're no longer being made, the supply will eventually run dry.

Well the thing is there are also some that have multiple fixtures especially if you live on a larger property, some would probably also want to keep one or two NOS as a collection piece. Then there's also the issue of defects and modern lamps not making to rated hours. Finally any spares can be useful in trades. Think about it this way, any rare vintage lamp that shows up on eBay in NOS condition would only be there if someone "hoarded" it at one time. Otherwise everything vintage would either be EOL or close to EOL.
Furthermore the definition of a reasonable amount is highly subjective so what might be reasonable to some others might take offense so for that reason I feel like this thread is about to run it's course.

It’s kind of frightening to think just how many cases of NOS lamps, be it SOX or mercury, British councils ‘threw’ out, I doubt they would have put them on eBay, (being bought with government money after all), as their not loosing anything! I’ve pulled brand new SOX lamps out of the WEEE bins at our local wholesale where contractors have just removed them because their not LED!, here again, it’s not costing them anything, and if you’re one of those contractors that’s not familiar or indeed interested in saving now obsolete lamps it’s no loss to you?

Good point, I think my problem is with the hoarding on the lamps on eBay. If it's getting thrown out, I don't see the issue with saving larger amounts. Even with lamps at the Restore I'll buy a reasonable amount but I sometimes get the feeling the stuff I pass on gets thrown out after sitting there for months without another sale.

As I've said, my problem is with people buying large quantities of lamps they have no realistic chance of actually using. What is the point of buying hundreds of anything, be it lamps, fixtures or dinner plates for that matter, if you're just going to stick them in the attic or shed and forget about them

Personally I do have over 100 Sylvania A23 mercury vapor lamps to use a lifetime supply of 100w mercury vapor bulbs for multiple fixtures I use.

I stock pile fixtures, lamps etc because I have future plans for use of them. Only reason why I buy now instead of waiting until then is because of fear that they could possibly not be available then, or they could skyrocket in value and I'll end up having to pay even more for them. But I don't buy things with just the thought of only leaving it in storage forever. I have actual plans for them.

That's fine, if you're going to be using them there's no problem.

The original reason why one might be upset at others buying lamps in quantities is because of some members snipering rare lamps off ebay, that were the only opportunity to anyone else from the lighting community to have such lamps
Here it's about stocking lamps for use... I really have my doubts that any rare lamps are involved here at all. Most likely modern lamps you can just go and buy in cases in any quantity you wish, straight from the wholesalers (or ebay as just one of the available sources). This buying of lamps makes no harm to anyone else. If anything, it encourages wholesalers to still buy in more lamps as they see continued demand
