HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!

Were there any US ballast manufacturers such as Advance, Magnetek, or Sola that made replacement HX mercury vapor ballasts for 250w H37, 400w H33, 1000w H36, and 1000w H34 mercury vapor lamps that had 120v taps?

I've wondered the same thing, and from what I have seen, they never did. They were only really available when you ordered a fixture with an HX ballast. I do want to know who makes 200-250w HPS HX ballasts that AEL and Cooper offer as options in some of their fixtures too.

Yes HX was made up to 400w. 400w mercury street lights had this as an option. I believe reactor/chokes were made up to 1000w.

The amp draw from a 1,000w reactor ballast with no cap must be insane.

Yes . My GE ballast catalog lists a 400w MV HX as GE part # 15G6250 . Specs: 120v LPF-Autotransformer , 440 input watts , 7.0 input amps , ballast circuit type - LAG .

Advance made HX-NPF 250w ballasts available as either a core and coil, or a preassembled version intended to be a bolt on replacement for NEMA heads. 71A3802 is the model for the core and coil, 71A3801-791 is the NEMA replacement. Both are 250w H37 HX NPF ballasts for 120v operation. The amp draw from a 1,000w reactor ballast with no cap must be insane.
It's actually better than a 400w 120v HX-NPF ballast if you're talking about a 480v reactor for H36. A 240v reactor for H34 would probably draw just a bit more. Assuming a 0.65 PF and a total input wattage of 1080w for a 1kW, 425w for a 400w, a 480v H36 would draw around 3.5A. A 240v H34 would draw around 6.7A. Finally a 400w 120v HX-NPF would draw around 5.4A

I wonder why there were so few 1000w HX ballasts for H36 and H34 lamps?

I am also interested in knowing if Advance also made 400w H33 HX mercury vapor ballasts with a 120v tapping. If so, I would be interested in knowing its part number.

Using ballasts without PF caps make sense when used on a multiple phases with a common Neutral (e.g. in Y arrangement in case of 3 phases). The PFC capacitors are then connected across the phases (in Delta). This arrangement prevents eventual resonant effects causing severe overcurrents in case the Neutral breaks. But it is usable only when all phases are switched together with a single contactor/switch.

I am also wondering if there was such a thing as a 1000w H36 mercury vapor HX autotransformer ballast that could run on either 120v or 240v 60hz mains supplies and whether there were any fixtures that used such ballasts as I am looking for a way to operate a Sylvania 880w Unalux high pressure sodium retrofit lamp on a 120v mains supply.

A thing that I know about single coil reactor ballasts without a power factor correction capacitor is that the current draw is basically the same as the lamp current. For example, low power factor reactor ballasts for 1000W H36 mercury vapor lamps should draw around 4.0A while low power factor reactor ballasts for 1000W H34 mercury vapor lamps should draw around 8.0A or so.

This idiot literally put 2-1kw ballasts loose in a single layer cardboard box with -0- packing or stabilization !!! Definitely a good justification for more chlorine in the gene pool !
