Chipped arc tube « on: June 12, 2022, 02:06:22 AM » Author: 108CAM
I have a Philips 400w MV lamp that somehow survived a 4 meter fall onto the tiles around my pool. Apart from the arc tube supports dislodging from the dimple and becoming bent, the tube itself is intact however a small chunk of corner where the end of the tube is fused together has chipped off. Does this chip render the lamp unusable or is it still safe to use?

Are you referring to a broken corner on one side of the arctube?

If the lamp is only a small break in the edges and corners of the arc tube side, without affecting the gas filling part, then it is still available. If the arc tube has an air leak, it is no longer available. :mv:

It won't hurt to try it. As long as the outer bulb is intact the worst it will do is not work. The only thing you'd have to worry about is if the moly foil lead in wires got damaged when the end chipped off . I have a 700w that got damaged like that and it's nothing more than a display piece now !

I think it will be OK as the chip is at the opposite end to the wires

You can power it up and run it to see if it's available.
