The surge protection present in "surge protection" is ONLY EVER good for catching fire in the case of an open Neutral and set your house on fire. It is useless for protection of the appliances from anything, unless a higher stage of protection is installed upstream, which 99% of the time isn't

Either way, a mechanical disconnection in the form of an off switch is pretty much absolute surge protection in itself (when the switch is off)
