I'm not sure... i would not think so.. but then again i dont know.. i do know that the relay was baking for a minute or so if it was the thing producing the smoke, because it took about a minute for the smoke to role over in my direction, it was some of that heavy smoke.. the stuff that likes to "roll"

Might of overloaded the relay contacts if they where not clean, lucky you didn't weld them together, you might want to remove the cover and hit them with a bit of fine sandpaper..

well i mean how though... the way i have it wired is the coil is in series with the HID lamp and the contacts are in series with the incandescent lamp... so when the HID lamp gets going the relay becomes energized and it pulls apart the contacts for the incandescent lamp shutting it off, i also have an override switch that i can use to bypass the relay coil and turn on both the incandescent lamp and the HID
I will clean them though... the thing probably does need it, i found it outside to begin with lol

contacts get old, dirty, corroded, things happen, if you don't apply a large enough load they have issues because they don't self clean, if you put to large of a load they overheat and can weld together, but looking at your circuit, I'd say your attempting to put to much current though the relay coil , what you really need is a time delay relay on it's own circuit, just a simple 555 timer would work powering an optocoupler and triac, and a few junk draw parts and don't worry to much about the ballast just have it turn the light on every power up..

Interesting... I will think about it... at the moment i've been kindof busy...
also... why did the lamp start drawing so much current at that particular time? I've started this thing up many many times and this was the first time it had issues, and i've started it about 5 times after the issue and its working like normal. was the lamp just having a hiccup or something?
also this relay originally came out of another HID lamp in the same configuration, only it was switching a fan or something.

Finally got the right power cord positioned how i wanted on my 1000W flood... i had to fight the box closed because it is quite crammed, i ended up breaking one of the original halves of the case so i replaced it with another, now it does not match... ugh... i guess i can repaint it though.. the power cord does not get warm at all now though, and its sturdier

failing cap, line voltage drop / increase, internal short in the ballast, the sun gods are angry at you for stealing there sunsets and turning the darkness into sodium orange, it could be a number of things if it doesn't repeat you should be good, but if you take out a second cap you know what will happen, so I'd test it and make sure its good...

Neat af. even better than my electronically ballasted 35w metal halide pickle jar of doom (I'll upload pictures to my gallery of that one because it's pretty cool)

What if I told you you could save 100% of your street lighting budget? Don't believe me? Buy an LED street light and run it for a week. the results will leave you in awe. (Aaaaaaand maybe wondering why you swapped that 70w SON)

How lovely ! I've always wanted to try this only with CMH, probably 50 watts. How hot does the top of the reflector get after several hours of use ?
I hope you're gonna use a thick hunk of glass on that!! ceramic lamps are worse than quartz lamps when they go pop owing to their arc tubes being made of a thick chunk of alumina and being very dense!

From what I have seen CMH explosions are usually less messy/violent because the arctube breaks into 2-3 pieces instead of zillions like quartz.
