Why does everyone hate the Durastar? « on: May 22, 2016, 09:28:28 PM » Author: M250R201SA
I will admit that it's a bit ungainly, but it kind of grows on you.  It is unique, just like GE's 201SA is a unique NEMA fixture but I never hear complaints about those.

I like them too. I can see why some hate them, but they look fine to me. That doesn't mean I would choose one over, say, an m1000, but they still look nice to me.

I also wondered about that for long time.

I still have my NOS Durastar 2000 100w HPS.  I haven't hooked it up in a while, but one of the "yuuuuge" advantages is that it is very light due to the fiberglass construction.  I realize that it has quite the unconventional installation method as well. (Twist lock) but that only makes it easier to swap out for another Durastar.  I doubt I would part with this anymore than I would part with my 250w GE 201SA Merc luminaire.  Both being unique designs.  And in terms of rarity, you see a lot more M250R2s and M400R3s than Durastar 20/30.

First Image:  Mine
Second Image: First Part, the receptacle.  To replace the fixture doesn't require any re-wiring, just swap out the head for a new one.  or upgrade from a 2000 to a 3000 simply by twisting and Remove/Replace
Third Image: Full fixture.  If the ballast/capacitor goes bad, simply unplug it, and replace the "Power Door" assembly of the same type.  Saves a lot of money.

Zarlog,  I agree with you.  I would definitely choose an M1000, M250R1, M400R2 (the last 2, NOS only), AEL 115 over a Durastar 2000 (20 series).  And I would always choose  :mv: over  :hps: any day the year.  However, unlike some, I would never turn down a free NOS Durastar 2000.  I MIGHT would turn down a Durastar 3000 (or I would take it and sell/give it away.

In the traffic signal collecting world there's a similar hate for "Durasigs" or other poly signals as opposed to metal.

Not for the UK market but seeing the pics, I love the shoebox shape as it resembles a mini lowboy lantern and yet look better than most LED lanterns

As one can see by the pics, I like the fact that you can easily interchange them, i.e in the case of the Durastar2000, you can easily change a 100w hps to a 150w hps without removing the actual head.  Like a PowrDoor if you will.  Don't have to mess with the hardline.  Just plug n' play.  Makes working on them a little easier

Does anybody see these go up anymore?  I have not seen a new Durastar go up in years!  My town has a total of 12 Durastars.  1 Durastar 2000, and 11 Durastar 3000s, and they are all dirty, old, and faded.  2 of the 3000s don't work, and the 2000 is all dirty and you can't see through the glass.  I know that 5 of these will eventually be replaced as the new highway expansion is finished.
