Visiting Dad lastnite, possible near EOL CFL, got it! « on: October 16, 2012, 01:59:31 AM » Author: MikeT1982
Well lastnite I was visiting my parents with the wife and my dad took me upstairs to show me a painting he bought from a thrift shop.  He flipped the light switch powering on the single decorative fixture that lights the room.  Inside a glass cover is two generic warm white 60 watt equivalent CFL bulbs.  Everything seemed normal then the room suddenly dimmed and brightened then flickered, I looked up to catch one of the two bulbs flashing, brightening, dropping to a dim glow, emitting a squeaking sound, bright again, etc.  I immediately said "dad shut the switch", he did and i explained what was going on and he got a spare and I changed it for him.  I took that misbehaving one home and haven't powered it since.  I would like to record video and power it up in the safety of my garage in an open base lamp.  I have a 0-140 volt variac (bulb is 120v) but don't know if playing with that is a smart idea...  After it quits I will attempt to dissect it a s post pictures of the failing parts.  The EOL of a CFL is completely new to me, dad convinced me to swap the 70 60 watt Sylvania Incandescents over to 70 13 watt 60 watt equivalent Sylvania Micro minis last June and not a single one has acted up.  They are still young lol.  Being a night owl my electric bill has dropped by approx $20 a month though.  I saved all the incandescents as I installed them when fixing up the house about 2 years ago.  When dad built around the same time, they put in generic cfls and where they didn't, he put in micro minis. The generics seem just fine other than one other incident of one just no longer lighting (peaceful EOL). Color wise I can't tell the difference from the Sylvanias if he doesn't tell me which are which though.
