Vacuum Cleaners? « on: January 06, 2011, 04:31:46 AM » Author: Mercury Man
Hey all,

I know this is off-topic (and we don't yet have an off-topic board)...BUT we're all enthusiasts of lighting, which to some could be construed as being a little unusual; however, who really cares, eh?

I'm just curious to know if anyone else here also likes vacuum cleaners.  I've had a fascination with them since I was a child.

Post something if you have an interest in a link to a vacuum cleaner enthusiast site.  For those who are interested, I'll PM you with the link. Just thought I'd throw this out there.

Brian

My parents did have an original Hoover, made at Methyr Tydfal in the 1930's, but as most of it had been replaced over the years ( all spares were available up to the late 1980's aside from the aluminium base castings) it was thrown out around 1990 by them, due to a cracked housing that was the killer of this sturdy machine.

The replacements since them are still Hoover though, currently I have a 1990's era Turbopower 1000 as my vacuum, saved from the skip as it needed a non available suction assembly cover, that I fabricated from some PVC sheeting, and since then have only changed bags and one drive belt.

I'm not particularly bothered about them myself but my Grandparents have a Hoover Constellation which is rather interesting.

It's a bit rubbish though, the idea is that the exhaust is underneath and it floats on a cushion of air like a hover craft but it doesn't really work on carpet.

I still use a Filter Queen canister vac probably from the '60s or early '70s for cleanup on wiring jobs. It still works well after being used regularly for over 40 years! I'm interested in anything electronic or electric. Otherwise, I've never had a special interest in vacuum cleaners.

One warning about using vaccum cleaner in computing and office environments: Never ever try to vaccum toner from laser printer and copiers with regular vaccum cleaner. This may damage vaccum cleaner because of explosion and may also cause fire, because the toner particles designed to have an electrostatic charge and are also flammable. Also the toner particles are so little that they can pass even through the best household vaccum cleaner nano filters and return through the motor back to the room.
Because of this, technicians of copiers and printers uses special Electrostatic Discharge Safe toner vaccum cleaner, to clean laser printer and copiers.

Heat can also be a factor here, if the toner heats up, it will stick!

Hey Brian, my regular vacuum I use at home is a beat-up Kirby 509 (1949). I like old stuff!
