Giving up on owning a home « on: February 28, 2025, 01:13:57 PM » Author: Cole D.
I’m slowing coming to the conclusion that ol just never going to own a home.

I live with my parents which is pretty embarrassing and stressful since my mom has Alzheimer’s as well which is very sad and just aggravating at times, if definitely builds my patience even though I certainly feel impatient.

Anyway I’m very much a late bloomer, but I’ve never had an issue with work ethic or my credit at all. That’s the problem, even if my credit was bad, it’s easy to fix that, it’s not easy to fix the income vs house payment gap.

I remember when houses here, very nice ones were well under $300k, some even less than $100k. Now you can’t get a decent property for much under $300k.

And it’s not just the prices, it’s the crazy insurance rates. Even if you can easily afford the home payment, you add in taxes, and a $5k - 10k a year for homeowners insurance,  $500 a month for health insurance, and oh yeah, I hadn’t go contribute $650 a month to my IRA to ever have any hope of retiring, and it’s just not possible on my income.

I just don’t think I’ll ever own anything. In less than 5 years I’ll be 40, which is horrifying. Over the hill. And at that point it will be too late to take on a 30 year mortgage either.

People always tell me that “everyone is on their own timeline” but to me that kind of timeline ends in ones 20s and 30s because you do not want the stress of a mortgage in your 60, 70s, 80s when you only have a limited income, if you live that long.

I’ve long given up on having a relationship or children, they don’t deserve the stress of my menta issues or need my genes passed to them. But I had hopes that maybe owning a place of my own would actually be achievable because it didn’t involve anyone else. But nope! And of course with out a property I cannot collect streetlights either.

I only own one cobrahead and some NEMA heads but I’ve had to stop collecting streetlights or ceiling fans or light fixtures because I don’t have a house to use them at., which is also frustrating.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

Owing to my meager salary, I have been living with my parent since I moved to Georgia about 27 years ago when my job search and saving dried up.  I have been living and supporting my parent until I moved to Hiram with my mother after my father's passing.  She sold the house and we live in senior community subdivision where she bought two house that she and I live right next door.  We don't have mortgage since she have paid them full on both houses.  With my current salary that I have now is enough to pay the house insurance, HOA dues and property tax.

Believe me, I could not do without this with my meager salary here :(

@Cole D. - I know where you're coming from...adulting can be very difficult to say the least, even if one gets a break or two.
Don't give up, you may get a pleasant surprise when you least expect it. ;D
What's the cost of living like in your area? Here in the greater Seattle area, it's beyond NUTS! :curse:

I  was  15 years old when bought some property off county court house step  for unpaid  pfoperty  taxes back in  the 90s with my grandpa.  For 20 bucks  for  two lots
Next door to my grandpa house.   I spent nearly 50 grand
Bringing in a portable building and septic tank.   I am living off my disabilty check and scrap metal recycling
Low in come.    I feel home owner insurence is a  scam
And rip off cause.  They dont want to pay out  when things go wrong.    Just take that money put it in the bank
Call it the emergency  home repair fund.   That best insurnce  u can have and no waiting  around for insurence
Company to  inspect  the damage waiting on  your check.

Only way for  this  to work  U have to pretty much own it
And  u pay cash for every thing and no morgage payments and all that crap.

I  lived  at  mom house till I was 35  years old.
