Can you run a 35w Sox lamp on a 55w ballast? « on: August 19, 2024, 01:20:43 AM » Author: Streetlightsandlamps
I would like to know if you can run a 35w Sox lamp on a 55w Sox ballast? This is because I have a lantern that has a 55w ballast, the lantern is a thorn gamma 6, but it can only fit a 35, 26, 18w lamp. I don’t want to risk damaging a lamp, ballast or ignitor.

Not sure about the UK ballasts but I know the US spec SOX ballasts are rated for both .

I actually didn’t look at the ballast properly, it is actually for 35/55w SOX lamps. :)

I would expect the ballast to have separate taps for 35W and 55W SOX lamps, similar to a MV ballast for 80/125W or a HPS ballast for 100/150W.

@dor123 The choke ballasts for 35w/55w SOX lamps don't have two different taps for the two sizes.

I would generally agree, most ballast have no different taps for 35/55W but there are some exceptions.  The May & Christie NA85 does have separate taps, and there was also at least one GEC ballast (with integrated ignitor) with dual taps.  It is not needed for correct lamp operation, but I think enabled a small increase in ballast efficacy.

In the US , Both the 35/55w and the 135/180w Sox ballasts will run either lamp without separate taps for either wattage .
