Rice paper MH « on: June 19, 2024, 04:21:07 PM » Author: sol
I'm sort of thinking aloud on this one. Would any of you put a 35/39W metal halide lamp (in a vapour proof enclosure globe) in a rice paper shade ? I'm thinking a 942 lamp would look quite good in a white paper shade. On the other hand, I don't want to (literally) play with fire...

Rice paper I would be particularly careful and use an open-rated lamp, also would check the lampholder and wiring so they will not flash-over and ignite the paper.

Though. If the luminaire is responsibly made, paper and wood may be impregnated with flameproof solution, something like ammonium phosphate or borax or alum, making it essentially non-flammable. Sure if you have an extra spare/cheap one you can test if the paper will really ignite easily.

Thanks for your insight. I would be using an enclosed lamp in a vapour proof globe. It would presumably contain a rupture and a flashover. I would never entertain anything more than 35/39W, however.
