Best lighting (bulbs) for bathroom sconces (putting on makeup)? « on: June 25, 2010, 10:34:54 AM » Author: Tab
I was in a hotel a couple of months ago, and the lighting in the bathroom was really nice (ie I noticed while putting on makeup that I looked really good--and I liked it!  ;D )  There were 4 overhead, uplights above the mirror.  I couldn't get a peak inside very well--I could only tell they were spiral, so therefore CFLs.  Two had a "warm" look, two looked "cool".  I wonder if this was planned--that this was maybe the reason for the complimentary lighting?

I'm about to buy the bulbs for our new house and was hoping someone could give me an idea of the best to buy.

Thanks!

I would first look for fixtures directly designed for fluorescent lamps and/or higher quality LED units.
Use of retrofit CFL's in an incandescent fixtures i would limit it only for temporary use for already installed fixtures with long burning time, before these fixures might be replaced by fixtures using some more efficient technology. This is, because CFL retrofits are generally less efficient and are frequently making troubles (not optically matching the fixture, short life, end-of-life with "smoke effects", frequently fire danger). The reason for low efficacy is, then packing long tube into small space make it loose a lot of efficacy, reason for short life and troublesome end of life is very small space and high operating temperature for the lamp's ballast (in the plastic box on the base)
LED retrofits are very expensive, but limited for low output and have rather short life. All is related to very limited LED chip thermal management possible in the incandescent-retrofit form, so it is frequently overheated - not possible to use decent heatsink LED's require for good performance and life (like on onpurpose build lanterns, where the usually aluminum lantern body serve as quite big and un-obscured heatsink for LED's)

Well, my fixtures are already here, and they're "normal" bathroom-type lighting fixtures that go above the mirror.

In the hotel I was in, I'm pretty sure it wasn't a very updated bathroom, so probably nothing special in their fixtures either, but they were using CFLs in them.
