I typically use a damp paper towel or cloth and lightly run it over the etch area. Typically, I only lose etches if my skin directly contacts the etch; I believe oils in the skin cause this, but I'm not entirely sure. But, if your tube or lamp is extremely valuable to you, do what Tim (Wide-Lite) said, just in case.

I killed one with windex and a paper towel .

I usually use a damp cloth or paper towel to clean the parts with no etching then use a cotton tip to clean around the etch. The cotton bud method also works really well for cleaning the small gaps between the tubes of CFL and PL lamps.
