I am thinking about getting a GE Solaris streetlight meant for the European market. I cannot afford a high-wattage DC power supply and pure sine wave inverter, so instead I will be running it on a step up transformer or a 240V outlet. Would it be possible to run this streetlight meant for 230V 50Hz on 240V 60Hz power, or would it damage anything?

If the lantern uses a simple series choke ballast, your best bet would be to get a 120v to 277v step up transformer because if you run a 220v-240v 50hz ballast on 240v 60hz, the lamp would be underdriven quite a bit and running it on 277v 60hz mains would compensate for that difference. In addition, another option is to swap the ballast with a North American ballast intended for 120v 60hz mains.

It is good to know that you can use a North American 70w M98 pulse start metal halide ballast to run a European 70w high pressure sodium lamp.

So a European HPS lamp has the starting characteristics of a US PSMH? Also, a US auto-transformer ballast probably wouldn't fit.

Remote ballasting would be a good idea, because in addition to running HPS and MH lamps, I would also be able to run household incandescent, compact fluorescent, or *gasp* LEDs.

In addition, a North American 150w S56 high pressure sodium ballast should also be able to run European 150w high pressure sodium lamps very well too because North American 150w S56 high pressure sodium lamps are electrically identical to European 150w high pressure sodium lamps. However, the more common North American 150w S55 high pressure sodium ballasts will have problems running European 150w high pressure sodium lamps because those lamps have a much lower arc voltage drop compared to European high pressure sodium lamps and they run at a higher current than European high pressure sodium lamps. Because of this, the inadequate OCV of North American 150w S55 high pressure sodium lamps will cause European 150w high pressure sodium lamps to cycle indefinitely.

I will just use a 150w PSMH ballast, because I don't want to mix up the S55 and S56 ballasts.
