Has anyone seen any LEDized HID fixtures that contain failed HID lamps as a result of the ballast being bypassed before? In those situations, I would figure that some electricians might inadvertently replace a failed corncob with a HID lamp after seeing the ANSI code written on the fixture.

A good sparky would do a visual inspection of lume to see if it has a ballast or not.   And even look if it funtional to replace a hid lamp.   Pulse start lamps many time just wont start with out a ignitor anyways when it bypass.  But probe start will thermally runnaway

No LED gadgets, spins too slowly.  Gotta  love preheat and MV. let the lights keep my meter spinning.

You could see that happening with a mercury vapor lamp installed.

On 230V and mainly with higher power (so beefier) lamps the result is often just a tripped breaker and the lamp surviving. Apparently the current becomes so hogh so quickly the breaker trips way before the lamp components melt. Had even a 125W MV that "survived" quite a few attempts to install into incandescent fixture and worked for quite a long time afterwards. Of course, "often" by far does not mean "always"... And indeed a good sparkie won't just blindly replace the bulb but really diagnose what really had failed...

A breaker might even trip on 208v mains too since most mercury vapor lamps need an OCV of about 200v to start and operate.
