On 230V and mainly with higher power (so beefier) lamps the result is often just a tripped breaker and the lamp surviving. Apparently the current becomes so hogh so quickly the breaker trips way before the lamp components melt. Had even a 125W MV that "survived" quite a few attempts to install into incandescent fixture and worked for quite a long time afterwards. Of course, "often" by far does not mean "always"...
And indeed a good sparkie won't just blindly replace the bulb but really diagnose what really had failed...
