Why does this not exist? I would think instead of going to metal halide, it would have been easier to use sodium and mercury together in more equal amounts to produce a much whiter light. Has anyone run a mercury and sodium right next to each other? Did it look good?

I've seen some gymnasiums that had dual fixtures, one being /DX mercury and the other HPS. Made pleasing light, although the most common configuration was /DX mercury and incandescent.

Hello OgreVorbis, some manufacturers have made this combinated types. In the 50s and 60s very popular lantern in Germany: "the chinese-hat" (Chinesenhut). The picture above shows two mv-ballasts and two autoleak-transformers Biggest version was made with 4 lamps mv 250W and 4 lamps lps 140W. Greetings from Hamburg Olav

I saw a Wide-Lite brochure on eBay recently where they actually showed an installation of both MV and HPS used to light the exterior of a building . https://www.ebay.com/itm/264650627708

I recall seeing an old brochure for those dual lamp highbays suggesting one be MV and the other be HPS as a cheap way to improve colour rendering. Even during the 70s, there was a suggestion to relamp 2x400w MV highbays with a lead-lag ballast to HPS on the lag side for the same reason.
Of interest, I believe Eye made a combined HPS and MH lamp with the arctubes in series for horticultural lighting.

With various types of metal halide lighting wouldn't think a "combo" light would be necessary.Eye still makes the combo HPS MH lamps.Still listed in their catalogs. Also with the "white" light HPS lamps from GE and Philips,Eye the mercury/HPS light wouldn't be required.

The use of both MV and LPS in the same lantern, is to save energy by turning off the mercury lamp at midnight. If you want white light from this combination, than only HPS and MV.
