I personally prefer HPS in most areas when driving at night to be honest.

LED is tolerable but it really depends on if the luminaire is glary or not. Also 3000K and 4000K luminaires are much better to drive under compared to 5000K and 6500K luminaires.

For some reason I never liked driving under MH streetlights, either the city uses too low of a lumen output compared to their street lit with HPS becuase they always seemed rather dim to me.

IMO the worst sources of glare on the road here aren't even the street lights, it's the SUVs and trucks with their poorly aimed 5000k LED headlights that just dazzle you when they pass you, or if they're directly behind out. Might also be them using "drop in" LED bulbs that aren't really suited for installing into headlight optics designed for halogen. Same goes for the people that stick HID headlights into optics designed for halogen. The correct way to retrofit to HID is to change the optics to a projector system.

In my town, most of the highway lights are GE M-400A2 Powr/Doors. There are also some sections of AEL 125. These are all 400W HPS with dropped lens. There are also a few Cooper OVX spot replacements. However a large section of the GEs were replaced about four years ago with Philips RoadFocus RFL LED fixtures. The rest of the sodium fixtures are being spot replaced with AEL ATB2 LED fixtures. They also replaced a section of AEL 125s with the AEL about a year and a half ago.

On my side of town, most of the streetlights were installed later on, around 2012. Most of the fixtures they used out this way are Cooper OVF FCO fixtures, with drop lens versions at intersections of the highways. Also 400W HPS. There is also a section, which is all AEL 125, but with sag lens. Those are the only sag lens fixtures I know of in my area. Those were also installed around 2012.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

You have a nice variety of fixtures in use. I’ve never seen a Philips RoadFocus LED, so how do they compare to the GEs?

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it.
I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

Thanks! The Philips ones have a more oval shape; the GEs are more triangular.

They look similar to a GE ERS2, but with different diode layouts.
