What lighting is used at intersections in your area? « on: November 11, 2020, 11:16:07 PM » Author: HPS_250
Just wondering, again.

Here, nearly all of the intersections use HPS lighting in some form. Newer intersections have Leotek LEDs, but none of the existing intersections were changed out. Most of the HPS fixtures are 250w FCO, with the occasional drop lens fixture or 400w FCO. 400w HPS lighting is just very uncommon in general, as 250w HPS is the normal here. About 70 percent of the intersections have GE M-400A2 FCO fixtures, with 250w lamps. The remaining ~25 percent of intersections have newer GE M-400A FCOs, which are also 250w. About 4 percent of intersections have shielded M-400A Powr/Door fixtures. Lastly, about 1 percent of intersections have either drop lens or FCO AEL Model 25s. Most have city owned and maintained lighting, while a few are CalTrans owned.

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it.
I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

GE Evolve ERS1s and ERLHs.

I haven’t seen Evolves at intersections here yet, so I hope it stays HPS for a little longer.

A lot of intersections here still use HPS as the original contracts for the changeout did not cover changing intersections to LED. That being said any intersection that gets new poles gets LEDs instead but the existing HPS still seems to be maintained.

Luminaires are a mix, seen some 115s FCOs, some R47s, some B2255s, OV25s. My part of town always had a decent mix of luminaires pre LED so it still shows with the intersections.

That is very similar to the situation with intersection lighting conversions in my area. They never changed the existing HPS lights, but all new intersections and traffic signal poles get LED. That sounds like a nice mix of Canadian fixtures. If I remember correctly, there is one intersection here with a single 115 FCO.

Rural areas - mercury vapor
city areas - High Pressure sodium, Mercury vapor or LED.

Sounds like a good mixture of lighting types. There are no mercury vapor fixtures left at intersections here, but the city intersections have HPS and the freeway exit intersections have LED.

It depends, closer to town the intersections with the metal traffic light masts, originally had Cooper OVF FCO HPS fixtures. These have been replaced with AEL ATB2 LED lately.

In downtown area, most of the intersections use GE M250R2 drop lens, AEL 115 FCO, or sometimes AEL NEMA heads, all of HPS.

The intersection near my house, used to have I think a GE M250R2. However about a year ago, they replaced it with an AEL 115 FCO in 250W HPS, when they were working on the power lines in the area.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

That’s not good to hear of LEDs beginning to replace fixtures near you. There were plenty of HPS Cooper OVF and OVH fixtures here, but they have since been removed. M-250R2s used to be common for general street lighting here, but there were never at intersections. Did it fail? If not, I wonder why it was replaced with another HPS fixture.

@sox35: Not good to hear!

In my area over the summer they rebuilt a lot of intersections here so a lot of formerly HPS intersections got LEDized. Casualties included a pair of 250w HPS OV15s from 1977.  :(

They also replaced most of the existing 12-8-8-12 advance and 12-8-8 signal heads with new all 12" signal. The old ones were all poly signals from the 90s or newer though. Still I prefer the 12-8-8 signals more.

They rebuilt two intersections in my area this year, but the only casualties were some Cooper Verdeon LEDs.   :D That’s really sad to hear that 1977 OV-15s were removed. I haven’t seen any traffic signal heads get replaced here. Most of those are LED, with one incandescent intersection that I know of.
