What is used as underpass lighting in your area? « on: November 12, 2020, 12:27:52 AM » Author: fluorescent lover 40
Around here, they have soffit lights in HPS and MV. Some were converted to LED, but most remain in HPS and MV. They are usually neglected unless they are maintained by a city. In some cases, HPS GE Wallighters were installed. In one area I did see some GE Versafloods in 70w HPS. The rarest ones are the pendant mounted ones. They are MV gumballs.

What's used in your area? I've heard of some pretty cool ones.

CalTrans lighting here too, so it’s mostly the Sequoia Lighting recessed HPS fixtures. I don’t know of any MV, and no LED either. A lot of the lamps are cycling, but most at least still work. There’s one underpass lit with acorn fixtures on double poles, some MH and some HPS. The HPS lamps definitely last a lot longer than the MH, that’s for sure. I don’t know the wattage of either, but I’d guess 200w HPS and 250w MH.

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it.
I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

Generally wallpacks either mounted to the abutments and columns or hung from the girders/ceiling using angled brackets. The source depends on the area but generally HPS or LED. Downtown Toronto has a few lit with PSMH and MH in order to match the PSMH gumballs. There's an oddball underpass that still has MV wallpacks for some reason.

In the past MV wallpacks and 4ft Powergroove lights were used and I know of one with abandoned MV recessed squares cast into the concrete.

TXDOT uses LED cobra heads. Before using LED, they used 150w HPS floods for the underpasses. Then in the later years, they started using 150w HPS cobra heads, which were the Cooper OVW and GE M400R2 FCO with the M250 reflector assembly, which now they're pretty rare now. Now TXDOT is using LED cobra heads for the underpasses now.

BTW, TXDOT started putting LEDs in 2015 ish?? Correct me if I'm wrong.

In my opinion, you should choose the longest lasting light source you can find for underpass lighting, because it is nearly impossible to maintain normally. Obviously, you can’t just get a bucket truck and set it up in the middle of a highway, so how are underpass fixtures really maintained? I would choose HPS for underpass lighting, because it has long lamp life and high efficiency.

Yeah you would pretty much have to do it at night and close a lane. I've noticed here the MTO might come in and group replace all the underpasses luminaires during major construction projects. I guess that's easier and safer than trying to swap a luminaire or ballast when the freeway is still live.

The city of Toronto likes to close their expressways outright for a weekend twice a year to do maintenance so I guess they probably have a crew going around and relamping all the underpass luminaries.

Underpass lighting here typically consists of normal Holophane style wallpacks mounted directly on the bridge columns. all of the modern stuff is HPS . There is also some older ones that are SOX.
