Hey guys, im currently looking into getting some hps ballasts and i did not want to break the bank buying pulse rated sockets and was wondering if it was okay to use normal ones for a 70-150w application.

50 to 150 watts with HPS chokes and 120 volt OCV I am sure the manufacture use standard sockets Only time it would flash over if socket is dirty.

I've used standard sockets for years with no ill effects. I think A ceramic socket would in theory fair better than a plastic one.

I think a ceramic, no paper insulation, should be fine. Second order for the lower wattages (35 and 50W) could be the plastic, but only base down, never base up, better not horizontal (the lamps have their center of gravity quite far away from the socket and are rather heavy, compare to incsndescents; and definitely will be running hotter at the base than CFLs or LEDs) Never use sockets with just paper insulation, the paper can not stand the ignition voltage.

I personally never use any socket other than pulse rated for PSMH or HPS, period. Probe start, I use only ceramic, nothing else.

I think pretty much all my mogul sockets are pulse rated. As for medium base lamps, I'll use standard sockets in some cases. My only requirement is that they be ceramic.

The only exception I can think of for mogul sockets are the 3-way floor lamp ones.

Yeah I don't think I ever saw a pulse rated 3 way mogul lampholder, or one that doesn't have a integrated switch for that matter.
Of interest, it seems most newer incandescent vapour light fixtures have pulse rated sockets. Handy for use who like to run HID lamps in them but not really needed for most people.

HID, LPS, and preheat fluorescents forever!!!!!!

I also do have some mogul sockets that are ceramic but not pulse rated and are designed with high wattage incandescent lamps in mind and they are only single contact rated.
