Feit Electric has a unique LED retrofit for fluorescent lamps on the market.  It is a ballast bypass model, but instead of wiring the existing sockets to the mains, the tube itself has a hardwired connection and merely uses the fluorescent sockets for support.  This avoids the issues with shunted vs. non-shunted socket compatibility, and arguably simplifies installation.  Do you think this design is safe?  I'd be concerned that the cable leading to the tube is apt to get pinched, sliced, or tugged if not routed carefully.

bad, but not as bad as some at a local restaurant under the entry awning.  I don't have any pics but they are old 4ft shop lights that have had the tube holders removed and replaced with bare strips of SMD LED's on the aluminum pcb's simply attached to the outside of the fixture where the tubes should be.  looks cheap and has bare connections that are probably referenced to the 120v mains!  

I think this is a product made to circumvent a bureaucracy trap, not made to be technically better in any way than others

Fluorescent lanterns are listed by UL/CSA/.. the way they come from the factory. That is, wired for Fluorescent lamps. Most conversions that are more than a ballast swap - Stuff like wiring 120V to sockets, converting 8ft lamp to tandem 2x4ft... Is unauthorized and voids the listing. The converted lantern will fail building inspections (if the inspector knows his job), and if there is a fire, the converted lantern will be prime excuse to deny insurance money whether it started the fire or not

This product allows the original lantern to be simply disconnected, then it does not count as "illegal electrical device" while holding the LED tube..



There are LED tubes that are made to get supply from 2 pins of 1 end, or from 2 ends (so those can work with shorted sockets), ones that can work straight on the output of existing ballasts - Especially Magnetic ones (as they are fairly predictable even under loads other than the intended one) so not require modification of the lantern, ones that require external LED driver to be installed in the lantern, and so on

With all those available there is no technical justification whatsoever to use the lamp with the wire
