Horrible news, Sylvania closing HID plant in Manchester NH « on: March 24, 2014, 09:04:14 PM » Author: Silverliner
With the GE Ravenna, Ohio HID plant gone, Philips Bath NY plant going this week, and now the Osram Sylvania HID plant in Manchester NH gone by this September. The only HID operations would be the Eye plant in Mentor, Ohio and the Venture plant also somewhere in Ohio but neither are large players in the US lighting market. LED is one of the reasons but there are many other reasons as well.

Hope that this won't be happen with Eltam Ein-Hashofet, as they mainly produces fluorescent (Both regular and compact) ballasts, HID ballasts and ignitors and magnetic halogen transformers.
In the past, GTE/Sylvania had a factory in Israel (With Tadiran), which manufactured fluorescent and incandescent lamps and probably even mercury lamps. This factory closed in the 2000's, probably because of competition from chinese made CFLs, and US Sylvania moving from GTE to Osram.
Also we had DJG which made incandescent lamps and electricity stuff. DJG also went bankrupt, probably from chinese lamps as well.

Alright so my question now is, does Sylvania and GE still make any lamps in the USA and if so, what are they?

I know that some of GE's fluorescent lamps, and at least some of Sylvania's incandescent lamps, are currently made in the USA.

I'm particularly interested in knowing where Sylvania's F32T8s are now made, in addition to GE's. if they are made in Mexico, USA, or Canada, then I can still purchase them.  I'm starting to favor GE's though since GE is still a traditional American company where as Osram Germany has claim on Sylvania and Philips of course is from Holland.  Up to this point I was a die hard Sylvania fan  :'(

All three major lampmakers in the USA still makes fluorescents in the USA for now. Sylvania is the only one of the three to still make incandescents in the USA, although GE will soon start making halogen A-19 bulbs in the USA. In addition to Sylvania there are also two small incandescent manufacturers in the USA, American Light Bulb Mfg in South Carolina and Hytron/Trojan (the makers of the Newcandescent bulbs) in Pennsylvania.

Excellent! I don't think I knew that.

When it comes to stuff made before the 21st century I'm a die-hard GE fan, but for modern stuff I tend to favor Sylvania, even over GE stuff made in the USA, for both incandescent and fluorescent lamps. GE's incandescent lamps, with their vertical filaments, are too fragile for my liking. Their locally-made fluorescent lamps are fine, but it seems Sylvania's tend to last longer, and I prefer Sylvania's cool white.

I too echo your feelings regarding the lamp life with Sylvania lamps.  I've found this to be true with Compact Fluorescent, Fluorescent, HPS, and MH lamps.

Not only did GE Lamp Plant in Ravenna OH closed. So did a GE Lamp Plant in Warren OH closed as well. I am a fan of LED. I love the lighting the LED creates. Hopefully prices will get better in buying LED products. The HID plants could've looked into converting into LED plants but I guess they prefer to close down instead. I guess alot of big companies prefer profits and $$. I prefer Energy Efficients and Energy Stars.

6500K Color Temperature Kelvin lighting works for me. I use 6500K CFL in all my incandescent light fixtures. I use 6500K Flurescent bulbs in my flurescent fixtures. I hope prices get better and hope I find 6500K LED lighting in the future. I love energy efficient and Energy Star products. Way to go!

@CrestwoodOhio: The thing is that all these people that are misplaced due to a closing plant are out of a job.  Another thing to mention is to take a good look at all those LED lamps.  Probably 99% of them are made in China and just about all electronic parts are made in China nowdays too.  Even the ones that say "assembled in USA/Mexico", all the parts is most likely going to come from China. :-\

True about China. We do need them as our ally however. And of course if you buy scattered products from Walmart, They usually said MADE IN CHINA. Looks like we have a long ride ahead
