What The Heck Is This Crazy Thing? « on: June 30, 2013, 02:14:02 PM » Author: Steele1992
I seen this on eBay, and I had a laugh at it.  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Unique-Unusual-Vintage-Electric-Table-Lamp-With-Energy-Saver-Round-Light-Bulb-/281126168774?pt=Lamps_US&hash=item41746ce8c6

I didn't know that something like that was possible. I wonder if that is safe?

And in case the auction gets deleted if you are viewing this message in the future, here's a photo from the auction:

I collect exit signs, preferably vintage ones.

I also have a little bit of a thing for light bulbs, too. Of course, hoarding them due to the incandescent bulb ban.

Ah, the circline adapters. Those were popular in hotels before the spiral CFL invasion. It's safe - just replace the lampshade.

It looks like one of those choke-adapters with shade holder attached to it. You'd probably be able to recreate this with a "normal" curcline adapter in a lantern where the shade clips on the lamp, just spread the loops a bit wider and clip it on the ballast enclosure

The only danger i see here is if the lamp is touching a too tight shade, that can get hot near the electrodes esp at eol, so just use it with bigger shade. It isby far safer than using CFLs in a normal desk lamp

All my table and floor lamps now use the circline adapters like that. The harp (the loop that holds the lampshade on the lamp) will fit over the ballast housing. And yes they are better than the spirals and they last a lot longer.

Circline adapter similar to this to be exact.  Was most popular in the 80s and 90s.  :circ:

Yeah I had several of these in the past. They worked quite well and lasted a long time. The were common before the CFL thing. I don't know if you can still buy them new or not as I have not seen them for a while in the stores.

I just seen two on e bay today.
There is also the hard to find double bulb fixture.

I tried to find it today and can't find it now.
Maybe it has sold already.

These are not too hard to find (yet) but I would guess they still make the bulbs but not the fixture.
I have not seen any in stores for a long time.

Which is too bad as they really worked good and lasted a long time. :D
They were perfect for table lamps.
I hope they make a come back because of this.

With these ever coming back I'm q bit pessimistic. These circline lamps can never offer excellent efficacy and you know, how mad are the "environmental" agencies after the efficacy figures.

Yeah Medved I hear you on this.

It seems today it is not what you like, but what someone else tells you are going to like.
The market used to decide, now the government decides for you.

Just like the incandescent light bulb ban.
Most people I know here in the states already switched to CLFs a few years ago.
The market already decided.
But the government had to get into it just to show who the boss is.

I am afraid that is the way it is now. :P
I am going to replace one of my CFLs with a 60 watt incandescent in protest. :)

Well, before 2009 I have completely ignored the incandescents, I really have nad experience with them when living with my parents.
But it was when the first wave of bans came into effect, when I started to stock up them... Just because I know on some places you can not reasonably use anything else, however up to now I still haven't had any need for one yet...
So would there be no ban, most likely I won't ever start buying them at all...
