I've been looking for one with an E27 (or medium) base, preferably coated, but seem to have hit a brick wall .. do these actually exist or is there an alternative which should work, does anyone use these things with E27 adaptors?

I have never come across a metal halide lamp less than 50 W with an Edison screw base. I believe that the 35 W and lower only come in bipin - G8.5 and G12. E27/26 lamps of this size seem to be either nonexistent or at least very rare. I haven't seen any ready-made adapter either, but you can get a G8.5 or G12 socket from eBay.

Seconded

However there are E27 to G/GU adapters for halogens maybe some of them can work, but i dont know if they will "appreciate" ignitor voltage at hot restrike of the lamp

These adapters may be distroyed when using to retrofitting MH lamps, as they aren't rated for the HV pulse of the ignitor.
35W MH lamps, are usually compact single ended bi-pin MH lamps.
After the ballast of my generic Hyundai 21W T5 HE batten, will blow, if it would be not possible to connect a remote electronic ballast that will located outside the fixture (But at a short distance), I will buy a fixture for 70W double ended MH lamp. This is the smallest format, that is availabe also with coloured MH lamps, as well as linear HPS lamps.

The EU's mains rated insulation shall safely survive 6kV pulses, what are the expected as normal resides from lightning strikes,...
This include wiring, switches, sockets and so on.
So it should have no problem to handle up to 6kV HID ignition pulses as well.
You may notice, than for the lamp wiring is usually used rather standard wiring material (only with higher temperature rating).
So if the sockets are made inline with the EU code, they would have no problem with HID ignitor pulses.
The problem may arise with cheepeese jokes, but such I would consider unsafe even without the HID ignitor...

I've been thinking about this, the only problems I can foresee are the adaptor's tolerance to heat and UV (shouldn't be too much of a problem with only 35 watts unless it's a really crap adaptor) and the reliability of the connections (also should be OK with a decent one).

There are worse "pinch points" which exist already in the setup when it comes to insulation resistance and cable/terminal separation.

The only one I know which exist is a Powerball HCI-E 35W/xx from Osram with E27 medium screw.
