.. I wonder how much (if any) influence lamp orientation has on the banding on SOX lamps? I've seen working SOX lamps with heavy banding along most of their length and others (on here) which are at EOL but the blackening is concentrated around the electrodes. Any ideas on this welcome BG

It could have something to do with the way the arc travels (i.e. 1. The lamp is horizontal and the arc hits the (or is closer to) the arc tube so the banding is more toward the center.  2. The lamp is vertical and the arc stays in a strait line and does not touch the arc tube so the banding is more towards the ends of the tube where the arc ends would be at.)
