All lights are created equal

Motivation for Posting Stuff? « on: April 10, 2025, 10:42:54 AM » Author: Multisubject
I don’t really know how to phrase this so forgive me if it sounds mean.

Well, not calling out anyone in particular, but there are a lot of pictures here of really common stuff. As an example, I have a GE 100W mercury vapor lamp, but I probably won’t post a picture of it because it is a really common lamp and there are other pictures already here.

Do you just post pictures of everything you got, or just the cool stuff? I only post the cool or unusual stuff, but maybe I am thinking of this in the wrong way. If you have a collection of 15 100w mercury vapor lamps, or maybe you have a lamp that has a manufacturing defect or something special about it, that’s darn cool, but are other people interested in just a singular lamp that is just like any other one? I know that sounds rude, but again I don’t mean it that way.

Again maybe I am thinking about this the wrong way, but what is your opinion on this?

For me, it's to just share what I have/photographed. For others, I have no clue, but you know, many people might just post for fun (just like sometimes I do when I don't have new photos).

Usually I collect bulbs (Mostly LED) and some HID ones. I also own a couple of streetlights, but most are made in Poland.

However, I mostly prefer SOX bulbs. LED bulbs in their efficacy will never beat SOX bulbs, in my opinion.

I only post whenever I feel like it, or if there’s something that’s worth sharing. My advice is to upload a photo of every lamp you own, it doesn’t matter if some don’t gain any traction, it’s about you sharing your own lighting collection.

When I've the first logged in LG, the first mistake what I made was typing up unnecessary things when uploading images. I've should of made my uploads more factual about every streetlight I upload, but you know- when you have something that you really wanted, you don't care about what you do In my opinion

You really give me hope for that site. I really wish all newcomers would think like you. From all the people who recently joined it seems like you are the only one who is capable to formulate question and use this site like a forum and not like a Facebook abomination. Thank you very much for that.
In my opinion you are completely correct. Post what is interesting at to what you have questions about. That is what a forum is for. There is no sense at all in posting a Thorn alpha 5 from 5 different angles-the same fixture actually. And yes it is completely normal for people not to upload everything they see, take an example of myself. I just saw dog waste. Did I take a picture no? Would upload it? Certainly not. Even thud I found interesting that it is in my garden and dispise dogs and certainly don’t have on of these things…

Well, that's what y'all think. I usually upload lanterns that have a detail. Some of mine don't but on Friday (tomorrow) is the last day of work, so I will edit my files. And also, It's not just for "Asking Questions", it's about gaining some knowledge that others don't. I know my files aren't complete as I didn't think about it when I joined in, but, it's the time to improve.

And also, If anyone has something against me about my uploads, just inform me and I will discuss it with you  :-\

I agree with @Alex, just because you have an upload limit of 5 (10 for older members) does not mean you should use it up EVERY SINGLE DAY. I'm not saying that people shouldn't upload things, just not 5 photos of every single light that they see. If you have something interesting or rare in your collection, then certainly upload that, people could learn from it or just enjoy seeing it! As for posts, the whole point of a forum is to discuss topics and ask questions, people should certainly still do that. I've learnt so much since joining LG, and have seen so many good questions and uploads (like this one), but wasting everyone's time with things that no one is really interested in, is just annoying.

I don’t really post many pictures unless it’s something I think is particularly interesting. I don’t just upload stuff to upload I guess is what I’m saying.

Also there’s more I want to upload, I just haven’t had the motivation to take pics.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

Any common light in my country may be rare for others. Also, I have searched the gallery, and I have not found other people with the same lamps. So, I use LG as an archive, and post when I find new lamps (I don't really focus on fixtures and gear).

I rarely post anymore, but I used to post most everything I got(unless it was a duplicate of something I already had).. Sometimes what you think is the 'common stuff' gets more interest than the less-common.
I have a little collection of stuff gotten over the past few years that I never photo'ed or posted(nothing special) but thought about doing so. Not sure if at some point I ever will or not.

I only post stuff that feels worth sharing too, like something with a cool backstory or a unique feature. But at the same time, sometimes it's those 'common' things that spark the most interesting discussions or bring someone else a sense of nostalgia or curiosity. You never know, what might seem mundane to you could be something others find fascinating. So, I say go ahead and post what you feel like, even if it's the 'basic' stuff. It’s all part of the collection and the journey.
