Security lights in older stores? « on: August 04, 2024, 09:34:26 PM » Author: Cole D.
I seem to recall when I was younger some kind of possible security light fixtures in stores. This was in older 70s-80s shopping centers in stores like Family Dollar, Dollar General or Eckerd Drug stores.

I seem to recall them being rectangular in shape, and usually located near the center of the store on the ceiling.

Could these have been some sort of LPS night security lights? I don’t have a clear memory of these being turned on but possibly they were an amber color like LPS. Although I could be confiding that with some HPS fixtures.

Most all of these kinds of stores have since moved out of the shopping centers into their own stand-alone buildings so I doubt any of these lights exist anymore.

Does anyone remember seeing such fixture and know what these were?

It seems like in some stores these fixtures were round in shape but I’m not sure of that.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

I do recall these security lights. They were 35 or 55 watt lps. Rather than leaving on the fluorescent fixtures, a few of these lps fixtures adequately lit the store for security purposes. Some of the smaller stores only had one fixture.

I remember them. They were typically 55W SOX, I believe Lustra and a few others made them. Drug stores around here used them way back. Some have ended up in the hands of collectors.

One of the suggested uses for the 18w SOX Philips Goldeye was a ceiling mounted security light for stores.

I think they started to wane in popularity when monochrome security cameras started to be replaced with colour cameras. I don't think I've ever seen a SOX security light, I've seen HPS canopy lights for that but I think most stores here just wire a few of the regular fixtures on a unswitched circuit instead.
