“Inside lighting” latest newsletter has a story about the impending ban of fluorescent lamps in all of Canada.

I suppose this is the article. I kind of expected it, especially with the current leadership (which I doubt will last long enough to see the ban commence) but I was a bit surprised to see that it's at least a gradual phase out over the next 4 years for linear fluorescent and most other non screw in CFL types instead of a abrupt cutoff. Interesting they mention for replacement purposes because I haven't see a large scale new fluorescent install (not counting fluorescent fixtures newly installed with LED lamps) for a few years now.

I wonder how the situation will be like in the US at that point? I know some states have already starting regulating fluorescent lamps at the state level, although usually specific types such as T12 lamps. 

In another article, apparently specialty fluorescent such as grow lamps are allowed until 2030, along with HPS lamps. No word on other HID types.

I can hear the mercury lamp go: Am I a joke to you??? 

I mean c'mon, it's kind of the elephant in the room!

I made that prediction already a while back, but things really start to point towards an LED-only world in 2030. Aside from the few specialty types, all of the LED's predecessors will have become history. And since 2nd-hand sales are hardly mentioned at all in all those regulations, it's kind of tricky to predict how easy or difficult it'll be to acquire new lamps for collecting purposes.

personally think the BAN will do little in second hand side of things as LAMPS are "consumables" and NOT "durables" like the fixture and by there very nature will get used up and become rare through natural attrition
I am of the opinion we are so far BEYOND turning back that the bans are MORE symbolic then functional
it is VERY rare to see a NEW install of HID/ floro lighting that is NOT NOS old stock and there is 6 years till all stock is to be NOT sellable
