Fixtures That Can Fit Low Profile HO Ballasts. « on: July 29, 2024, 04:59:37 PM » Author: suzukir122
I'm looking around for fixtures that can fit LP HO ballasts... specifically the four footer fixtures. I'm kinda hesitant to post this thread as I'm not sure
whether I'll go through with this idea, but I do hope to find slightly slimmer fluorescent fixtures that may be able to fit those ballasts. If I have to
resort to full sized HO ballasts and fixtures, that's okay as well. Still on the hunt for six footer HO fixtures of course, which is my primary search.
My end goal is to set up shelves that can hold six footer HO fixtures, and use those fixtures as up lighting for my loft apartment, downstairs and upstairs.
(Six footer HO fixtures are very tough to find online.)
There is a chance I may end up using four footer fixtures instead and if that be the case, I'd want them to be HO, but slimmer than the average HO fixture.
I'm new to the "Low Profile" HO ballasts, so I'm assuming that they're ballasts that are slimmer than the average versions.

IIRC the magnetic low profile HO ballasts are around the same size as a magnetic slimline ballast so most two lamp T12 strip, industrial and turret fixtures should be able to fit them.

Fixtures with side mount lamps, wraparounds, and troffers will generally use a narrow ballast channel, one sized for HPF RS ballasts at most, those generally will have trouble fitting a low profile HO ballast.

Note that I've seen electronic HO ballasts with the same cross section as a HPF RS ballast, those generally will have no problems fitting into anything.

Are low profile magnetic HO ballasts limited to four footer HO lamps and smaller? Or are there low profile HO ballasts that can operate six feet and above?
It seems like six footer slimline strip fixtures were more common than HO six footer strip fixtures, so if there are low profile HO ballasts that can operate six footer
lamps, maybe I might be able to find six footer fixtures for them. lol

The magnetic low profile one I have will do F60 lamps when wired for single lamp operation but not F72s. Two lamp operation is limited to F48 and under.

For the longer lengths you might have to use electronic, those easy to find in low profile and will run any HO lamp from F18 to F96.

;D... you know me man... I'm sticking to magnetic HO. haha... I definitely like the electronic HO ballasts as well but I just don't like them as much
as magnetic R.S ballasts. Especially the full powered ballasts. lol
Speaking of... are there any full powered two lamp magnetic low profile HO ballasts? If so, with the proper fixtures and reversible end plates, that is the route
that I will take, instead of using six footers.

Fair enough. I believe my magnetic low profile HO ballasts (Universal/Magnetek 631-LH-TC-P) are full power. However they have a lower OCV compared to the "brick" HO ballasts, which might be better when running shorter lamps as it means you get RS startup flicker instead of instant starting like with larger HO ballasts.
