Long live the HPS and SOX!
|
I’ll be taking a trip to San Francisco this June and staying across the bay in Sausalito for a week. Of course I’d like to see any remaining SOX fixtures on the Golden Gate Bridge, but I’m sure there are plenty more interesting fixtures around the city. Hopefully everything hasn’t been converted to LED, or if it has, there are some older missed lights. Anyone have any photo requests or recommendations for where I can see some cool lighting? We’re going to spend a few days around the city so I’ll have my camera with me anyway!

I’ve always been interested in all kinds of lighting, mainly incandescent and HID, and especially all kinds of sodium lamps (HPS/LPS). I’ll tolerate LED but I’m not a fan of it. I’m not proud to say that my city has Devolved to LED.

Hmm, I guess one potential location is on Market St near the Embarcadero. It has some old 3-globe light standards that line the corridor.

@Econolite03 - I think you're referring to the "caged acorns."
There's a few McGraw-Edison Resilite gumballs near Fort Mason, along with a few dropped dish yoke-mount post tops (a few with LED corn cobs) and Spaulding Lighting Vandalias. All are HPS. Some inoperative Holophane Vectorfloods line the sidewalk along Marina Blvd.
There's also an old, dayburning Wide-Lite F Series next to the loading dock for the ferry to Alcatraz; it has a greened out, clear top, 400W BT37/DX MV lamp in it. Along that wall where the garage bays are, there are some old Stonco incandescent PAR38 double bullet flood lights.
By Pier 39, there are some Lithonia/Hi-Tek TXL 250W MH low bays lighting the road and sidewalk. Also, check out Musée Mécanique; there's hardly any LED in there, and there are some old arcade games, too. When I say old, I mean 1930's to 1980's old. There are RUUD Lighting ICJ 400W MH low bays and some inoperative 400W MV "mid-bays" (high bay housing and brackets with a low bay optical assembly)
By Ghirardelli Square, there are some old Victorian post tops with 5,000K LED's in them.
Somewhere downtown, I saw the wall of a building that had AE Series 113's in 175W MV.
You will see tons of Holophane historical luminaires, and even some Louis Poulsen Albertslund post tops along Jefferson St. near Fisherman's Wharf. Not lighting related, but you will see ATI HPSS16 electronic warning sirens throughout the city.
Check out my 'Out & About' album to see a few of the lights I saw there.

Unfortunately, I don't remember the exact locations of these.
There are some Westinghouse MRF-400s I saw in Chinatown. And there's also a street with incandescent (some retrofitted to HPS) teardrops and some vintage gumballs and NEMAs. I really hope you can find it.
That's all I remember and that also hasn't been mentioned yet.

Never been to SF so I'm not too familar with what light are around. That said some closeups and wide shots of the GE M-2 at the Golden Gate Visitor's Center would be pretty cool. Even the odd amber lenses induction shoeboxes on the actual bridge would be pretty cool. Especially night shots.
I think Alcatraz still has some old 1940s preheat fluorescents in the interiors although they're in pretty rough condition.

Definitely some nice fixtures to check out while I’m there, thanks for the recommendations. Most of these I should be able to see and take photos of depending on how much time I have to walk around. @Joseph_125: I know for sure that I’ll be going across the Golden Gate Bridge a couple times, so I’ll definitely check out that GE M-2 near the visitor center. I didn’t know that there were amber lens induction fixtures there either, so I’ll see those too. Night shots would also be a possibility since we’ll have to cross the Golden Gate Bridge in the evening to get back to the place we’re staying. As for those fluorescents at Alcatraz, I probably won’t see them since I’m not planning on going there. @Fluorescent lover 40: I’ll definitely be able to see those fixtures in Chinatown. That street with the incandescent fixtures and gumballs/NEMAs sounds really interesting, do you have any idea where it could be? I’ll probably do some searching on street view and if that doesn’t work I’ll see if I can find it while I’m there.

Sausalito might still have some select old incandescent street lights on the residential streets. Check em out!

Heh. I've been over that bridge many times, and every single time it's been so foggy it was hard to see the car in front As for those fluorescents at Alcatraz, I probably won’t see them since I’m not planning on going there.
You should. It's well worth a visit, but you probably won't want to stay
