I recently stumbled upon some old mercury 1000w gas station canopy lights at a building materials salvage place, the lamps installed inside were Sylvania, all heavily used, the fixtures were rusted terribly and all the polycarbonate lenses were busted so I asked if I could purchase just a single ballast and lamp out of one light for curiosity sake, rather than haul the large 3'x3' fixture home, which they agreed. The ballast and lamp are stamped H34, I guess I never knew there were two different ANSI specs for 1Kw mercury, as I was only used to seeing the H36.
Whats the difference here? After some testing, the ballast puts out an OCV of 280v, and the operating current measured 7.8A, the ballast is an HX circuit with a parallel cap, which is clearly shot since PF reads only .52
Btw, the lamp took 16 minutes to fully warm up

I"m don't speak English well, and rely on online translating to write in this site. Please forgive me if my choice of my words looks like offensive, while that isn't my intention.
I only working with the international date format (dd.mm.yyyy).
I lives in Israel, which is a 220-240V, 50hz country.

Dor123 it a rare uncommon H34 Mercury ballast. that website did not list it.
Ok Bluehalide H34 and H36 are two different breeds of MV lamp. the H34 have lower arc voltage and runs 8 amps this lamp can be run in series on 240 Volt with ballast and choke. But H36 is the norm here cause it much cheaper to wind the ballast to step voltage up over 440 plus OCV. while H36 gear runs the 1k merc at 4.3 amps but CWA more common

No LED gadgets, spins too slowly. Gotta love preheat and MV. let the lights keep my meter spinning.

Quote from a Sylvania engineering bulletin : "CAUTION: The 1000-watt lamp is available in two types- the H34 High Current and the H36 Low Current. The former has a nominal operating current of 8 amperes and a rated average life of 16,000 hours, as compared with 4 amperes and 24,000 hours respectively, for the latter. They are not interchangeable and must be operated on ballasts designed for that lamp type. Lamps and ballasts could be destroyed if H34, H36 lamps are interchanged. Consult warning label." Source : https://media.distributordatasolutions.com/Sylvania/v1/files/File_Technical_Document_-_High_Intensity_Discharge_MERCURY_Lamps_69408.pdfNot sure why the two exist, however.

I think the H34 ANSI ballast, is to run the European low voltage 1000W MV lamps in the US. The website lists the H42 ANSI ballast, which designed to run the European 125W MV lamps in the US.

The ballast has a single 240v input tap, so that makes sense. I connected it phase to phase without a neutral to get the 240.
Another interesting thing to note, the lamp is actually not quite the typical BT56, when compared side by side with a modern BT56 MH lamp, the mercury lamp is at least 4" longer (much longer neck) and the bulged center of the envelope is quite smaller in diameter, just a little larger than a BT37. And even though the DX coating is almost totally spent, at startup its more orange than pink

BlueHalide, what did they charge you for the ballast? I don't have a H-34 and might be interested in one. I recently bought a N.O.S. CHAMPION/ITT 1000 watt /dx H-34 off eBay from seller mendy1967 for $20 + shipping! They still have 6 more lamps available

Here's the listing for the ITT H34's. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Champion-ITT-Mercury-Lamp-Light-Bulb-1000-Watt-USA-H34-12GW-DX/123539363227?hash=item1cc385159b:g:5fEAAOSwQctbToZC:rk:75:pf:0Also, I'd suggest checking out the seller's store. They have some old incandescent stuff available like streetlamp bulbs.

It would be interesting to have 120v HX H34 ballasts.
