Following affixes and definitions found in Universal's fluorescent ballast catalog
UNIVERSAL BALLASTS for fluorescent lamps Dec. 1, 1977.
PREFIX TO UNIVERSAL CATALOG NUMBERW- pp3
indicates the ballast complies with Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. requirements for Type One outdoor use and for wet or damp locations as well as for indoor use.
WP- and WPR- pp27
indicates the ballast is enclosed in a
WEATHERPROOF case designed to withstand direct exposure to rain or snow. A watertight junction box should be connected to this ballast.
The new round weatherproof ballasts have the prefix “WPR-” in the catalog number. The rectangular weatherproof ballasts will continue to be available; use the prefix “WP-” in the catalog number when ordering.SUFFIX TO UNIVERSAL CATALOG NUMBER-2L pp9
TWO LEVEL LIGHT OUTPUT — These two level light output ballasts will operate 40 watt straight or “U” shaped Rapid Start fluorescent lamps. They offer the user the option of operating
at full light output or at a light output reduced to approximately 50% when full illumination is not required for the task being performed. A proportionate decrease in energy consumption is realized resulting in a power cost saving when the ballast is operated at the low level.
-G pp31
low leakage to ground Special one and two lamp, 30 and 40 watt, high power factor Rapid Start ballasts and a 20 watt, low power factor Trigger Start ballast are available to meet requirements for “low leakage to ground”. When ordering these ballasts, specify “LOW LEAKAGE” and add the suffix “-G” after the regular catalog number.
-L pp8
indicates the ballast is manufactured in a
LOW PROFILE (SHALLOW) cross-section case allowing for greater flexibility in fixture design.
-LH -VLH and -SLH pp3
indicates three types of ballasts with various heat characteristics. The “
-LH” ballast is a
LOW HEAT rise ballast, the “
-VLH” ballast is a
VERY LOW HEAT rise ballast and the “
-SLH” ballast is a
SUPER LOW HEAT rise ballast. Any one of these ballasts is to be used when the heat characteristics of the fixture/installation combination do not permit the use of a standard ballast. These ballasts also generally contribute to a reduction in the use of energy.
-QP
I discovered this affix on UL Product Spec, later I found
an example of it here on Lighting-Gallery.net: MagneTek UNIVERSAL™ 446-L-SLH-E-QP. It seems Universal/MagneTek
QUICK PLUG™ ballasts have no captive wire leads. Instead of permanent wires, QUICK PLUG™ is an on-body coupler connector, used with an appropriate harness assembly.
-PL pp9
These two level ballasts are also manufactured with plug assemblies permanently attached to the ballast lead wires. The switching from one lighting level to the other is accomplished by means of a reversible plug assembly. All that has to be done is unplug, reverse and plug in again to change the light level. The use of the plug assembly eliminates the need for wire nuts. Also, the ballast is automatically de-energized when the assembly is unplugged. To order the two level ballasts provided with plug assembly, use the suffix “-PL” with the catalog number.
-STF pp2Safe-T-Fuse protection is available for all CBM (ETL) ballasts and high power factor Trigger Start ballasts. To order, suffix the catalog number with “-STF”.
-TC pp2Universal non-Class P ballasts with built-in automatic resetting protection will continue to be manufactured for those applications where Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. listed Class P ballasts are not available but automatic resetting protection is required. To order, suffix the catalog number with “-TC”.
-TC-P pp2Universal's Underwriters' Laboratories, Inc. listed Class P ballasts should be specified as
Therm-O-Matic Class P ballasts and are identified by the suffix “-TC-P” after the regular catalog number.
-WS pp3
indicates the ballast is provided
WITH SOCKETS attached to the ballast leads.
meaning not knownMany suffixes appear without definition in that catalog. I found (twice as many!) more mystery affixes in UL File FKVS.E15265.
