My parents have started to replace our lighting to LED « on: November 13, 2020, 09:36:23 PM » Author: Cole D.
Last week the fluorescent fixture in our laundry room had bulbs going EOL. So my father replaced the tubes, but decided to go with LED this time. He also showed me some new Sylvania LED bulbs which he replaced the bulb in the light over the kitchen sink with. The color is similar to the old incandescent, so I did not notice until he showed me the new box of bulbs. SO my parents, are starting to go with LED bulbs in our home, and I don't know yet how I feel about it. Although I prefer the fluorescent bulbs definitely.

Collect vintage incandescent and fluorescent fixtures. Also like HID lighting and streetlights.

TBH I found CFLs to have generally been pretty mediocre compared to screw in LED bulbs. It was hard to find ones that could be dimmed and the ones that could didn't dim as well as incandescent or even LED. Not to mention the slow warmup time that some CFLs had, even modern CMH warms up faster lol.

I have used CFLs since the early 00s (2002 or so) and never had problem with their light spectrum. Yep some in 2700K had it too pink, so i relocated them to where this color would be ok ("ambience" lighting), while other 2700K and all 6500K were perfectly good color, both of the light itself and things under the light. (6500K is more common here than 2700K in general, but in my house its a mix of both, chosen for different rooms). I find the spectrum of 2700K CFLs easier on the eyes than Incandescent

In the warm up time, i found that the cheaper brands are not as dim and they warm up faster - I guess they just dont try to push the limits in being as low mercury as Osram/Philips. But they also dont last as long

I have now 1 LED lamp, a 4W 2700K filament lamp in the corridor (surplus from a lighting project i did about a year ago, which actually benefited from LED lighting). The color doesn't look bad when looking at the lamp itself or at illuminated white walls, and in fairness it is better than other 2700K LEDs i have seen, but it is still off whenever looking at colorful things under the light, If it would be a higher power lamp and used in an application where it sees more use and more time is spent under its light, i would be concerned also for health effects

My parents never used CFL much. I remember, the electric company sent a box with some CFL to all customers, when the government was really pushing CFLs and going "green". I think about 2007/2008 or so. They tried them in a few fixtures, but the CFL were either too large to fit, or in cases where they did fit, they just burned out quickly. I'm thinking due to heat buildup, in the enclosed fixtures.

So after those CFL were used up, they never bought any themselves being unimpressed with them, and just used incandescent/halogen until now.

My grandmother though, was different. She used some of the earliest of CFL, I remember her having some she said were from the late 90s. As well as those circline bulbs that could be used inside lamp shades. Now, she's wanting to go all for LED, and she's had one her light fixtures replaced with LED. She even had the electric company replace the HPS streetlights near her house with LED.
